Disco TD5 Breakdown - Fuel Pump?

Was the pump getting 'noisy' before the breakdown ? Some tend I think to get noisy before failing . Would be worth checking that there is actually a 12V supply at the pump - in case of a broken wire /bad connection .

    Coolant leak...

I had a leak in my 2001 Td5 which took a while to track down - was from the top of the engine radiator (nearside ) and was only visible with the cowling (top half ) removed . I also find that to really do a thorough check you need to have a look up from the underside - a leak clearly visible...

    stupid design

I had a 96 Disco a few years ago and it had 4 brake lights - 2 in the rear bumper and 2 in the upper light cluster . My sister then bought a 98 Disco and asked me to replace a few bulbs . Spent ages trying to get the upper 2 brake lights working - and acces was poor due to it being a 7 str ...

Cost of replacing Dual Mass Flywheel

At that mileage its likely the DMF - have seen them fail at 50 K ; and 100 K would be considered good going by most . And as pointed out disc/pressure plate/release bearing and spigot bearing should be changed while box is out . I also changed the rear crankshaft seal on mine .

    Starting Problems(2) - 1996 Discovery

Get a length of wire , bare a little at both ends , hold one end on small terminal on solenoid ( having removed the feed wire from ignition ) and then have someone touch other end of wire of battery positive . Make sure not in gear . If starter turns it would point to spider problem (most...

fitting forward facing seats into a 300tdi

The Discovery 2 is a little longer to accomodate the forward facing seats - so I imagine the space ( legroom) would be very restricted in the D1

Clutch pedal nearly to the floor

Can't see what harm it would do to bleed it - because from what you say it sounds like thats just what it needs . Even just loosen the bleed screw and let the fluid flow out under gravity for a bit - just keep the reservoir topped up .

Cost of replacing Dual Mass Flywheel

My dual mass failed about a year ago - but the clutch felt the same , it was the vibration I noticed first . And I have changed DMF in a few cars and again it was noise/vibration rather than the clutch juddering that was a problem . As peter says , the DMF may not be at fault - do you have any...

    New Disco owner saying hi

Welcome to the forum - a great source of advice and experience IMHO . I have a 2001 Td5 with 209 K on the clock - by comparison yours sounds like its just well run in . Have had a few problems but still a big LR fan - got the bug as some would say .

TD5 Air to Coils problem - Thinks its still got air!

Considering getting a Nanocom as dealers around here can charge crazy prices - e.g. my brother was quoted €115 to extinguish SRS light following fitment of hands free kit . Another dlr later did it for €50 . It seems Nanocom does pretty much everything on the D2 - would that be a...

TD5 Air to Coils problem - Thinks its still got air!

I changed to coils a few weeks ago having had both sides going completely down at random during the very cold weather . Left everything in place as I felt the height sensors could be the problem but couldn't wait for replacements at the particular time - may reinstall air again . Disconnected...

fuses for rear heated windscreen / high level brake light?

Just as matter of interest my sister called me last week to say her brake lights had stopped working . I always ask had any other repairs been carried out before the 'new' problem appeared . She said the top hinge had been replaced on the rear door . Turned out the wire from the heated rear...

    Steering box leaking worse,HELP

When the steering box in my 300Tdi began leaking 2 yrs ago I enquired from the main dealer re cost of seal kit . The parts man advised against it - he reckoned you would be very lucky to even get a few months of a cure at best. So I got a recon unit from Paddocks and it was well worth it . As...

Reverse Light Switch Fault - Landrover Discovery 1 - R380 Gearbox

I took the reversing light switch out of a 98 300 Tdi on Sat thinking it was adjustable - it had the same problem i.e. you had to keep the gearlever hard over to operate the lights . Had the Disco on a lift and got the switch out in a few mins - using a cranked 19mm ring spanner. There is a...

How many miles should a TD5 do ?

I bought my 2001 Td5 with 166 K on the clock . Now has 210 K and still runnig well - starts first time every time even in the extreme cold we've been having . Changed the dual mass flywheel at about 196K - and the clutch as well even though the clutch had thousands of miles left . Have seen...

    300tdi loosing oil

I have found in the past that doing valves and a new set of rings can give good results - and it doesn't cost a lot . A full rebuild can get expensive as well as being a lot of work . Depends I suppose on how long you expect to keep the Disco and how much your annual mileage is .

    Td5 oil filter

Oil and oil filters are 2 items you need to get right for your engine . You can justify spending a little more on genuine parts as cheaper ones could do serious damage to your engine . And something like a missing non return valve could leave the engine short of oil on start up - when most wear...
