Car is left to me at the moment so I went out to check : a) started easily enough - ran at about 1100 rpm ; b) after a few mins revs came back to just under 1000 ; c) press brake and revs go down to about 800 ; d) when you press brake you can hear like a pump running for about 30/40 secs...

    2.5 diesel cutting out .

Thanks for replies . Starts OK from cold - idles at about 1000 rpm and drops as it warms up , to about 750/800 rpm. The drop when brake is pressed could be 150ish - can't see why it happens but it does . Will put him in touch with Irish Rover .

    2.5 diesel cutting out .

A friend has a 98 Range Rover auto with the 2.5 BMW dsl engine with 150K on the clock . It starts fine but unless well warmed up it will cut out (most times) as soon as you select Dor R - it can be very frustrating trying to get going . I also notice that with the engine idling if you press the...

Starting problems ... Starter motor? Help please

My brother has a 96 300 Tdi and once the cold weather set in it wouldn't start in the morning . He lives on a big hill so let it roll each morning and it started easily .:D The battery was only 10 mths old and was supposed to be well up to the job ( the first battery he got 11 mths ago was sent...

    Rear light question

You're correct UP - was talking to someone while posting and got it wrong .:o The D2 has a high level and no brake lights in the bumper - just 2 in the light cluster . The set up on the 98 300 Tdi is as I said - it has 2 in the bumper + the high level one . They just don't look right as the...

    Rear light question

Don't know what year an R reg is but - my sister has a 1998 300 Tdi and it has just the high level brake light and 1 each side in the bumper ( 3 in total ) . I once had a 96 and it had the same as you have your self . I now have a Td5 and have found that apparently the last of the 300 Tdi's...

    TOTAL MYSTERY Coolant Loss!!!!

I would be of the opinion that if the head gasket was leaking the coolant loss would continue to the point of emptying the system - same would apply to leaks ; when the engine is warmed up and pressurised coolant will be pushed out whether the leak is high up or low down ; When the coolant is...

    Help with poss belt prob

If you have the timing kit you can't really go wrong . It will set the pump for No. 1 and the pistons - pistons 1 and 4 will be at TDC at the same time ( no. 1 on compression stroke and no 4 on exhaust stroke ). The camshaft can be lined up with the mark on the head . With belt fitted you will...

    TOTAL MYSTERY Coolant Loss!!!!

I have a 2001 Td5 with 220 K mls on the clock . It was losing coolant and I could see traces around the oil cooler . Removed the oil cooler and replaced gasket . The gasket had worn away to nothing at one point . But I still had a leak . Then I noticed some traces on the cylinder head - there is...

Anyone having to pre-heat their 300tdi *three* times each morning??

I wasn't suggesting bump starting would solve your problem - but as another post said if the engine gets a quick spin the compression doesn't get as much time to leak away ( especially on an older engine with some wear ). I had VW dsls for many years and heating them 2 or 3 times in cold...

Anyone having to pre-heat their 300tdi *three* times each morning??

Battery output lower in cold weather - slower cranking . Starter could also be slowing down - slower cranking . I think I once read (but am open to correction :D) that while a petrol engine nedds to turn at 500 rpm to start - a diesel needs to turn at something like 800 rpm to start . And I have...

    Air bags to coils

I converted my 2001 Td5 last January - the airbags started to go down randomly and often and didn't want to be spending too much on it . I left everything in place so it could easily be changed back again . Easy to do - as you say the light on the dash will remain on but the really annoying bit...

    Coolant Loss

All cylinder heads as far as I know ues dowels for location - to keep the Cyl head from moving . The bolts have some clearance in the holes they pass through in the head - and they provide a clamping force . But with the bolts alone the head could move relative to the block . So the dowels have...

    Coolant Loss

I had a small leak from my 2001 Td5 - after much searching tracked it down to top corner of radiator ; only visible sfter cowling etc had been removed. And if the leak is small the water will evaporate so no puddles !!! As regards pressure in the system I found that while all vehicles...

    Disco rear Brakes Knackered

A few weeks back I changed the rear pads discs seals and pistons in a 98 300Tdi . Dismantling the calipers can take a while - especially getting the old pistons out . However the pistons and seals are very cheap to buy - and when you get it all back together you have a very goood caliper again...

    Dual Mass Flywheel

Have you any idea of how many miles the DMF has done - if its 80K or up I would replace it if it were mine . I know there are all kinds of measurements etc BUT you would be hoping to get , for example , 80 - 100K out of your new clutch ; if you don't change the DMF and it packs up after say 40K...

    sun roof leak help
