Amended my post above to clarify, The spring on the yellow knob goes between the knob itself and the top of the gear tunnel, there is a bracket with a little cup for it to locate. It does sound like the pin is not doing its job of holding the dog in 2wd position which is what it should be doing...

It is all to do with emissions, older series engines vent to atmosphere.

Just a repeat of @kermit-rr above, do you have that spring between yellow knob and tunnel that makes yellow knob popup? It is also possible you may have to drive the vehicle a little bit for the gear dog to release and it to go into two wheel drive.

Most older type diesel systems did not run a return to tank line.

Where is the fuel filter? Often air getting in at filter seal or any connections allows fuel to drain back to tank.

I had to replace mine a few years ago, fuel light comes on to soon,1/3 tank best I could get it. It may be worth checking fuel level by looking into tank with sender out and then seeing if you can match gauge to what is in the tank by bending the float arm.

I would try putting a bit of epoxy in the drive square but put just a smear of Vaseline on the cable end push it in and leave to set. If it works good, if not you will still be able to remove cable.
