MG Metro would have BDL needle as standard, you are needing more fuel at low revs because the cam makes it inefficient there so you'll need to modify it at the top with Brasso or fine wet and dry to allow more fuel in. Could try Landy V8 needles or Rover v8 (BBG) probably be nearer to what...

Dont pay much attention to getting timing as per charts/figures in a book. Your engine needs as much timing advance as you can give it without the engine pinking under load Tune carb by the book if you like but then give it a little more fuel cause that's what they like I've never felt the need...

I had a lamp post which a passed at 3000rpm in third, started stopwatch and then stopped it at the firestation and noted my speed. Then tweaked it a bit and tried again to see if any improvement.
