    You should be able to see visually when getting underneath if there's any melted plastic/rubber or cable sheathing - that's what would cause the burning smell if the handbrake cable is acting as a substitute earth If there is, need to take off the gearbox/chassis earth straps, clean up and refit

    Can sometimes be the handbrake cable acting as an electrical earth Worth checking the cable isn't getting hot when you smell burning

    Or wiring I'd pull the connector off the switch, Earth it and see if light stays on Clean terminal, refit and if still intermitant suspect the switch

    Safest to take it to a paint shop and get it colour matched - as you say may not be original Assuming original paint, would have been cellulose.

    Just run it in plastic conduit cable tied to the top of the chassis rail Secure, won't catch anywhere and easy to get to if necessry
