I'd say check the timing first. White smoke sounds retarded however knocking sounds advanced. So check it then the injectors. A diesel place should be able to test the injectors off the vehicle.

You need to push it in and do about 1/4 turn. I thought you could turn it either way. If it still doesn't locate then maybe the detents are worn/broken so you need a new one.

You need to decide what to investigate. The gear won't affect the engine running (unless you're trying to do 2mph in 3rd) If it's difficult to get into gear, it could the clutch dragging which could also cause your stall as you slow down. If it selects gears then concentrate on the engine...

The bolts currently used for the housing will be too short. If it's a 5 bearing engine then they should be m10 x 1.5. If a three bearing.....something else (7/16?) Either way, get some threaded rod and nuts and use that. Edit. 3/8 unf was imperial one
