    Series 2 Knocking noise

You need to get a passenger to listen and try to find where the noise is coming from while you drive. Get a long steel tube, screwdriver or something similar to use as a listening device. Put one end against various likely spots and the other end against your/his ear. A mechanics stethoscope is...

Lucky fellow; I wish I could find one, especially a 1953: my birth year. Keep us posted and keep asking questions. John

1977 Series 3 2.25 Petrol Running for 40 mins then cutting out, any suggestions?

Check the plugs, I think you will find them to be black and sooty. Instead of a fuel starvation issue, you seem to have an over-fuelling issue. Strip the carb, clean all the jets and passageways and check that the float valve is cutting the fuel flow as it should. Check also the float level.

1977 Series 3 2.25 Petrol Running for 40 mins then cutting out, any suggestions?

Have a look in the top of the carb, when you work the throttle mechanism, does the accelerator jet squirt fuel in or not? If not, you have a fuel starvation issue.Take the fuel pipe off at the carb and crank the engine, fuel should squirt out. If not, it might be the fuel pump or the fuel filter...

series 11a with 200 TD engine

I had one from a Fiat 127, it worked just fine, manual switch. I used to switch it on in heavy traffic etc just as a safety measure. This summer I forgot it and left it on and the bugger burned out and seized up, or maybe it seized up and burned out? First thing I knew about it was when I...

    Italian 88 Series III - Should I or Shouln't I?

Have a look at this pic and you will see a little bolt in the collar; yours seems to have sheared off. Undo the bolt and the splined end will pull off the shaft of the wheelbox. You have a problem in undoing the bolt... Is there enough to get hold of with mole or vice grips? I'm assuming that...

The middle seat: strictly a 'needs must' option. Was forgetting: yours is a 109 too, already fitted with 750s or their equivalent.

    Advice on a series 3...

Can't comment on either the 19J or the 2.5 petrol engines but a 2.25 petrol will cruise happily at 55mph if fitted with 7.50 tyres so a 2.5 petrol should do so also. I would advise you not to go for a high ratio transfer box. I considered this option for my 109 fitted with a 200Di but was...

    Electric fuel pump or not

I'm not a fan of mechanical fuel pumps; they break down with no warning... I've only ever broken down up the road twice in any motor and both times it was a mechanical pump failure.

    Electric fuel pump or not

If it is you can always get a Malpassi to dial the pressure down a bit... Problem is, the Malpassis used to be reasonably cheap and affordable but now they are too expensive. I think there are cheaper alternatives though...? If the pressure is too high, fuel can get forced past the closed needle...

    Electric fuel pump or not

Facet pumps are great; I have a 'Posi Flo' type on mine which pumps veg oil to my 200 Di. For a petrol engine make sure to get a low pressure delivery type: 2 or 3psi. Remember the 'Malpassi' fuel pressure regulators? They were intended to reduce delivery pressure to the carb down to a steady...

I'm with you there dag, I have been servicing my son's cars ever since he could drive but now he's got a Peugeot 207 and I refuse to work on it, the tin and plastic heap of crap... so he's had to join the schmucks and pay garage costs. Don't worry, I'm not offended, I knew exactly what you were getting at. There's a Youtube video on 'why do mechanics always run around in old motors?' Advice on a series 3...

I can answer that by referring you to this post which I started in 2010... Bear in mind this figure doesn't sound so bad now in 2018 but there wasn't a new galv chassis nor any other very expensive part. This was just parts, no labour. Most expensive single item was a 200 Di engine which cost me...
