    Aesthetics - BF Goodrich KM3 7.50r16

That’s helpful Rob1miles. I understand the differences, it’s just curious to me that all the OEM tyres - Rangemaster, Super All Grip, ZXL and G90 all have a mud bias pattern. I just think the rugged look suits the series. In 7.50, my choices are ZXL, G90, General SAG, Rangemaster, BFG KM3 (all...

    Aesthetics - BF Goodrich KM3 7.50r16

@rob1miles Those Geolanders are A/T right, rather than Mud Terrains? What are your thoughts on MTR tyres in a series. I’ve been hammered on forums for saying it is unsafe to put MTR on a series just for their look but Land Rover supplied defenders with Goodyear wrangler MTRs and range masters...

    Aesthetics - BF Goodrich KM3 7.50r16

Hi - am in the process of doing up my series 3 and approaching what I would argue as the biggest aesthetic decision in the car - wheels and tyres. I’m a fan of skinny so am thinking of going with the new BFG km3 mud terrains on wolf rims. But, before I fork out £1k, has anyone got any pictures...

    Advice on Flywheel Serviceability

Hello. So thought it is good etiquette to update on the final outcome for future users of this thread. I consulted 3 expert firms (including turner engineering) who all said i could be ground down to give a decent working surface. Their view was if expensive disc brakes can have grooves and...

    Advice on Flywheel Serviceability

Thanks. I appreciate the effort to do the research but there’s a fair amount of questions out there as to whether you can fit a 3MB housing onto a 5MB engine. I think I’ll focus on skimming for now. Alternatively, would it be possible to get a 5MB series flywheel and add a ring gear from the...

    Advice on Flywheel Serviceability

Honestly, whatever setup you try, housing, flywheel and starter come to near £600. I think the putting was caused by rust. The engine obvious sat for a long period once. Trying to gauge whether we think this one is salvageable? You can skim up to .74mm

    Advice on Flywheel Serviceability

Hello All. A conundrum for you. I have a pitted flywheel on my series 3 (photo attached - I don't know how bad this is as I haven't inspected many). The issue I have is that I have a rare combination of Series 3 with 5MB engine 2.25 (branded 2.3 / 11H) from early ninety. The flywheel for this...

    Starter grinding timing conundrum

UPDATE Issue COMPLETELY FIXED..... a mere 2 years and a few thousands pounds later. I approached a guy called the Distributor Doctor who rebuilds original Lucas dizzies and rebuilds them, etc. He immediately said it would be the cheap powerspark electronic distributor and for £300 (!!) I...

    Starter grinding timing conundrum

That’s super interesting. The coke thing I’m less convinced of due to the issue occurring on starting up cold. I understood you need a hot engine for a carbon deposit to glow enough to pre-ignite. I like the fuel point however as I was beginning to thing about that. I have been using additive...

    Starter grinding timing conundrum

Hi James. I did - they looked in reasonably okay condition given the grinding. What’s your thinking? Given it’s sometimes fine and turns over without issue with ignition disconnected, I thought it was unlikely to be starter/ring gear connected. The kickback also sends the crank momentarily back...

    Starter grinding timing conundrum

Hi James - right starter. Like for like replacement and checked with parts book. Also no grinding except when ignition wired up. Thanks for your help. Tom

    Starter grinding timing conundrum

Hello all - 2 years on and still battling problem. Must have spent hundreds of hours and definitely thousands of pounds trying to sort. Am a little desperate now. As a reminder, it’s a 5mb 2.3 petrol from early ninety. Starting is slow (cranks over a fair amount before starting) and has a...

    Can someone explain... brakes

Responses crossed - not connected to brake lines yet. Obviously the spring in the cylinder is stronger than the spring depressing the shoe into the cylinder. I fear this could be a bit of a headache.... but must be the same for everyone. The lower mounting of the return spring on the trail show...

    Can someone explain... brakes

Hope you’re okay Blackburn - sounds nasty. Cylinder isn’t plumbed in yet so don’t know about air bubbles but if no fluid or air in system and pipes all open, shouldn’t make a difference.

    Series 3 Swb brakes

Did you sort this issue? I have the exact same with new Delphi brake cylinders. The trailing shoe bottom spring isn’t enough to force the cylinder back into its housing. It’s an early 88 S3 with 10”. Thanks

    Can someone explain... brakes

Thanks Blackburn. Sure enough need to push trialing show in to get drum on but it such a powerful push the drums have zero chance of rotating. They’re brand new Delphi drums. That seems like a mamouth design floor if the drums are too powerful for the brakes? I just can’t see how this is going...

    Can someone explain... brakes

Hi Rob. Piviot is fixed. Am pretty certain this is the correct spring setup and it’s as per the set I removed. Until I put the drum on, I don't know if it’s an issue, I just like understanding these things. Feel it makes you a better mechanic. Tom

    Can someone explain... brakes

On an old 88 series 3, the trailing brake shoe doesn’t have enough strength (under the power of the bottom black spring) to return the brake cylinder back into its housing. On the top, the red spring attaching the forward shoe to the tab on the backing plate has enough strength to completely...

Have I ruined my half shaft bearing?

Thanks Steve - new one installed. You were quite right. Expensive mistake. Not sure how you can get them out without them breaking.
