    P38A Tornado Chips

It advances the ignition amongst other things. To stop pre ignition you need to run 98-100 octane. So yes you get more kick and often save some mpg normal running.( Smaller throttle openings same power)but super is more expensive and if your not enjoying it why bother. None of that considers the...

    P38 4.6l problem over 40mph

Throttle position sensor? Just to say something different! This has some control over gearbox. But sounds like fuel to me. Check maf. Is it Thor or gems?

    P38A Spark plugs

Not many cars use champions these days. My xjs uses them in fact they used to not run well on ngk. Champions are usually cheap.(and slightly nasty!)

    P38A Spark plugs

Fine points are usually iridium btw but not necessary on an old v8.

    P38A Spark plugs

If you can change the plugs in under an hour without crossing any threads fit ngk bpr6es . If it takes hours and involves much dismantling and risk of cross threads fit platignums. I'm not a fan of multi electrode plugs it just extends the plug life but kills the flame wall.( Fit fine point...

    crank position sensor

That's a typical failure mode. When it cools it will start fine and probably continue ok until you stop and get heat soak off the engine.

    P38A Spark plugs

I thought Bosch had fancy schmancy plugs because it was thought you needed to remove the inlet manifold to change the plugs.

P38A Coolant leak at rear of engine.

Use the loctite grey from Halfords specifically made for antifreeze gaskets and yes it's actually a different type of silicon than the black. Don't put it on all gaskets. Put a circle around the waterways on the inlet manifold both the manifold and head.just a smear of the black on around the...

    P38A Exhaust manifold bolts

Seriously take off the intermediate steering joint. Remember those threads take about a second to bugger up. Only by hand .

P38A Coolant leak at rear of engine.

Change the spark plugs on a Thor. I'm not great on Thor's but it could be core plugs on head or indeed other things. Gems corroded more because they used blue antifreeze. Rtv the waterways both sides of the valley gasket. I use grey loctite from Halfords. Core plugs are a pain. I can confirm...

    P38 losing coolant.

You need a mirror and a light. That makes it sound simpler than it is! The key is to suss out the height the coolant is appearing. The inlet manifold has coolant passages at the back in line with the inlet holes. I pressured the coolant system to 15 psi before it leaked at 10 psi it was fine...

P38A Heat wrapp vs old heat shield

Heat wraps fine and works great. Be careful as it carcinogenic and sticks in the fingers to. It won't overheat the engine it may make the engine bay cooler and stop the wires cracking!

    P38 losing coolant.

Very likely inlet manifold. Could be head gasket but difficult to see. When I found a leak and confirmed it was the inlet manifold I popped a bottle of the dreaded k seal in. Months later not lost a drop and confident it's plugged. If its hg definitely fix. K seal won't work for long. K seal...

Other Wheeler Dealers RRC and RR P38

The p38 episode was from when these were a desirable used car. Bit like the l32l now tbh.the styling tips would be from the l322. The p38 was only 9 years old not the old banger it is now. As the bulk of vehicles go to scrap standard vehicles are more desirable as examples. I seem to remember...

    P38A Gems vs Thor.

Driving mymy aj xjs at 80 getting nearly 28mpg I'd suggest any issues aren't with the engine management or the gearbox simply with the design of the rover v8 at 4.6l. ( same engine management and gearbox albeit 2wd v4wd) The aj16 has 4 valves per cylinder (24 valves)
  18. J

    P38A Gems vs Thor.

I think the strength is identical. My gems has a Thor crank. A basic problem with v8s is height of the inlet arrangement. The gems intake arrangement is very high practically touching the bonnet. This restricts the length of the intake runner. BMW twisted the intake to increase the length thus...

Easier to get a used hub or maybe a recon hub. But pressing in these bearings sounds a serious biz!

range rover p38 4.6 block id

Taking a set amount (.020 inch?) Is considered normal from the cylinder heads for a clean up. Rave shows where to measure the amount already taken off. Past this they don't recomend it. Although mine had the max off the cylinder heads and also at least 2 good skims on the block(another .020?)...
