Disco 2 Function of glow plugs

Thanks Fery, I'd seen that but it's a fairly superficial explanation (on p424 of my copy of RAVE BTW!). The document you linked to earlier was a generic one describing all sorts of glowplugs and I wasn't sure which type we have fitted or how applicable it was.

Disco 2 Function of glow plugs

I might try that some time. Presumably it only tells you they're switched on, not that they're actually doing anything?

Disco 2 Function of glow plugs

Yes indeedy. I assume the post-start operation is as Fery describes. I can't find that description in RAVE - could you provide a link Fery?

Disco 2 Function of glow plugs

Mine has always started in all weathers without using the glow plugs at all. And it runs as sweet as a nut after 170,000 miles..... No visible smoke on starting and as long as I leave it running for 20 seconds to get the oil round the auto box none on take-off either. Just my experience not any...

Disco 2 (Solved) Crank sensor problems

"Voyage of discovery" - how apt! We're all on one of these but maybe in different places......

Disco 2 TD5 Auto slight lack of drive immediately after start.

That's perfectly normal in my (70,000 mile) experience. As said, it takes a few seconds for the oil to circulate.

    Disco 2 Advice before buying

I've kept a running total of every litre of diesel that's gone into my auto D2 for 70,000 miles. And I get 22 mpg over that period - about 25% pulling a 1400 kg caravan.

Disco 2 The end of the Disco ???

Something like this (but operating an alarm rather than a cutoff) might be a good idea?

    Disco 2 TD5 underheating?

Time for a new spider obviously.

    Disco 2 thinking of a D2

Well I cruise at 70 on the motorway. Interestingly, the mpg with the van on the back is only a couple worse than it is solo. Of course I'm then driving at 60 rather than 70..... It's been consistent over 10 years and I have changed the MAF at one point during that time. My brother did once...

    Disco 2 thinking of a D2

I've never got anything like that. Over 70,000 miles, checking at each fill, it's slightly over 22 mpg. That does include towing a caravan for about 20% of the time, otherwise a fair bit of town work and driving at the speed limit elsewhere.

Disco 2 Improving cabin air quality

There's no way you can stop exhaust fumes getting in other than setting the climate control (assuming you have it) to recirculating - even then it's not 100%. There is an attempt at a pollen filter across the air intake plenum at the rear of the bonnet opening but even when in good condition...

Disco 2 The end of the Disco ???

It sounds as though the MOSFETs did take something else with them. Why not go for a replacement ecu - plenty on ebay for under £200. Seems better than scrapping it.
  14. I

Disco 2 The end of the Disco ???

Best of luck changing the MOSFETs. Hopefully their going down hasn't damaged anything else.......

    Disco 2 How noisy

I'd rather have it noisy than broken..... Actually the only time I hear mine is if I'm stood outside it with the engine running which is hardly ever.
  16. I

    Disco 2 How noisy

Is that safe with the electrical injector actuation? We're always being told to use the right oil......

    Disco 2 Brake judder/snatching

If it happens when stationary it's just the ABS self testing. They all do that sir.

Disco 2 New owner and oil leak straight away

That's why I got someone else to do mine. The first FPR was faulty and leaked so he had to fit another.... Very glad I wasn't doing it.

The petrol engine is much the same as the D1 as far as I know. Anyway, I much prefer RAVE to Haynes. Plus it's free!
