Series 3 109 Station Wagon, full ground up resto and 88 redo careless resto driving project

Nice welding once again. I know what you mean about the alloy but I saw some pics of a green S3 which had been rubbed down and cleaned up, down to the metal in places, then given a shiny clear coat and it looked great. It might not be practical or even that easy to achieve but we'll see. If I...

I know I said 'very tidy' but those welds are a work of art really! I've never seen such smooth welds but why not? If you want to go to that level of effort and have that sort of finish then it's something special whether people see all of it or not. Mine is a bit rough and ready by...

Yes I suppose that is true, that is one of the beauties of working on what is almost Meccano and you're right about other methods or improvisation for certain things. I'm probably too cautious about taking things apart which on the surface seem complicated and require special tools or parts...

It basically is new really, at least as good a quality as new now. I'd better hope my parts are in good enough nick because all this stuff is beyond me, I haven't got the tools or facilities for it.

I'm impressed with your fabrication of your own new dumb irons and all the jig parts holding the geometry correct. My irons have been replaced in the past and one of them is stamped with the correct chassis number, it's a good idea to do it.

    Dashboard illumination Series 2a/3

Testing the bulbs and checking the earth/s first would seem a good idea before delving into wiring generally. As a point of interest I decided to try mine the other night and when I put the lights on the gauges light up, regardless of which way the switch with the little dial icon below it is...

    Can you work this out?

I used to have a P6 which was a V8 auto, standard 3.5, and it had exactly the same problem. The standard mechanical fuel pump was swapped for an electric one back in the fuel line towards the tank and that cured the problem. From your first post do you have an electric pump already though?

Yes I have heard of problems lining up the filler with the body, that's something you really don't want to have out of kilter when everything else is sorted.

That's what I was thinking, there's always bound to be a few issues on a vehicle of that age and that complexity but by and large, jobs a good'un.

Good news. It did all sound a bit dodgy at first but all worked out fine, if you've got an MOT now as well there can't be that much wrong with it. Looks in good nick too.

It seems replacement fuel tanks are always trouble to line up one way or another. At least it looks like you could cut those brackets that link to the tank and re-weld shorter, so the holes would line up without messing about with the chassis.

    Tyre Air Compressors

I would say you've made a good choice there. I've got one of those cig lighter plug in ones which is fine for the car or the trailer wheels, but I can confirm that it would frustrate the hell out of you for the Landy. I pumped up the tyres on mine with it once and they weren't even completely...

    E10 Petrol

I have to agree that there is a degree of scaremongering over this and doubtless hidden agendas, but I also have the opinion that it is possible that a higher concentration of ethanol may degrade certain things quicker or even cross a threshhold of degradation which was not the case at 5%. I...

How to recommission a Series Land Rover?

That is true, my handbrake gaitor had perished and fallen off and although it wasn't the job highest on the priority list, I wanted to replace it to stop the rats getting in. New one fitted, 2 years later it disintegrated. It may be possible to assess rubber items in good condition and keep...

You will probably need to renew everything rubber, in particular apart from what has already been mentioned the brake line flexibles.

It would be interesting to hear if the DVLA can provide any info. which confirms your engine being original although I would suspect that it is. As you say failed 6's were often swapped out for something else and that has partly lead to their rarity now. By chance I was speaking the other day...
