Disco 2 Got the head off, what else should I be doing/chekcing while we're in there?

Cam shaft looks in good condition. There seems to be some sort of coolant leak around the inlet; what should I look for to see if I should replace the whole flange? Garage suggested replacing what I think they said was the chain tensioner; but from what ive looked up the thing they showed me...

Disco 2 Blowing exhaust manifold, again. Probably need new cylinder head; what am I looking at?

My garage just gets everything from Andrew Page, so while it's quality stuff, its really expensive.

Disco 2 Blowing exhaust manifold, again. Probably need new cylinder head; what am I looking at?

Car is going in next week so my garage can take the head off and I'll take it to a local-ish guy who might be able to spark erode the original hole clean and skim the manifold. He does engine rebuilds and head refurb, so if he can't then I'll have to look at a refurbished head from somewhere...

Disco 2 Blowing exhaust manifold, again. Probably need new cylinder head; what am I looking at?

Looks copper to me; surely that's really soft and inclined to fail? Or is that the point - the nuts fail and not the studs/head?

Disco 2 Blowing exhaust manifold, again. Probably need new cylinder head; what am I looking at?

I'm more wary of that than I am of getting a replacement cylinder head tbh. No way to know what I'm getting, running the risk of things that I already had to get done on this one (like the turbo) going again. Not to mention all the other bits that I've done to this that I don't have the time to...

Disco 2 Blowing exhaust manifold, again. Probably need new cylinder head; what am I looking at?

I'd still be missing one bolt altogether, so it's never going to seal until I can do something about the holes. As to the garage, they did the best they could with what it was at the time. They said they believed this should hold, but if it didn't then I'd need a new head.

Disco 2 Blowing exhaust manifold, again. Probably need new cylinder head; what am I looking at?

So I'm already looking at £400-600 just for that even before I get anything done to fix the head. Plus I need some welding doing, and a pair of new tyres... This could easily leave me without a car at all; I'm gonna run out of credit cards to pay for any of it.

Disco 2 Blowing exhaust manifold, again. Probably need new cylinder head; what am I looking at?

Nowhere near crazy enough to consider trying it myself at home haha. I'm pretty much a beginner with doing anything on my car. So far I've only changed the front brake disks myself. I do intend to get onto more; but I don't think this should be step two lol. How much work, time-wise, is...

Disco 2 Blowing exhaust manifold, again. Probably need new cylinder head; what am I looking at?

So I'm thinking my best option now is to get her into the garage for them to get the head off. Then I can get someone in to have a proper look and see what can be done. If nothing much, then I'll have to go with one of those replacement heads.

Disco 2 Blowing exhaust manifold, again. Probably need new cylinder head; what am I looking at?

Not sure what makes you think it has the same issue? The £325 is tested and (briefly) guaranteed; one of the others has a stud stuck; but that can be drilled out, unlike the original hole on mine due to the two drill bits broken and stuck in there.

Disco 2 Blowing exhaust manifold, again. Probably need new cylinder head; what am I looking at?

What I mean is that if either is enlarged then they'll start to encroach on each other; or can one be plugged up to provide strength for the other?

Disco 2 Blowing exhaust manifold, again. Probably need new cylinder head; what am I looking at?

That bodged stud is stripped now though, so it's offering no hold at all. My only chance to get anything significant done would be the last week in November, and I need the car for Christmas, as well as making deliveries most nights, and getting to appointments, including that last week in...

Disco 2 Blowing exhaust manifold, again. Probably need new cylinder head; what am I looking at?

No, anything I could get done to it now will need the head removing anyway. So given that I have to get that done anyway, and I'm not confident that it's a guaranteed fix (especially with the extra hole that shouldn't be there) for the £200 I can get a second hand head for, I feel that's...

Disco 2 Blowing exhaust manifold, again. Probably need new cylinder head; what am I looking at?

Absolutely, and I understand that. But he could have said it better. Much as he's most convenient for getting the manifold refaced, its not likely i'll actually take it there now. At this point the info I'm getting back says that it'll need spark eroding out of the hole, at a cost of over £200...

Disco 2 Blowing exhaust manifold, again. Probably need new cylinder head; what am I looking at?

Well the place this morning was unhelpful, and to be honest pretty rude. Wasn't impressed by the guy's attitude at all. Instantly just said "not interested", as if me even asking was a waste of his time. Have tried messaging a few other places advertising cylinder head re-manufacturing in the...

Disco 2 Blowing exhaust manifold, again. Probably need new cylinder head; what am I looking at?

Its bloody heavy enough lmao, but yes fair point. I was literally searching "machine shop", guess it pays to be more specific lol. One of those places opens early and is an easy detour on my way to work. I'll drop in for a chat in the morning; thanks!!

Disco 2 Blowing exhaust manifold, again. Probably need new cylinder head; what am I looking at?

The issue remains the stuff stuck in the bottom of the original hole that they couldn't get out
  19. Naf623

Disco 2 Blowing exhaust manifold, again. Probably need new cylinder head; what am I looking at?

Well I can only find one which I could cycle to, and only two others within about a half hour drive if I was to hire something else to get me there and back. In a city like York I did think there would be more and easier to get to. You can sort of see in the image that the lower right is a bolt...
