    P38A M51 diesel cooling improvement.

Mine is not overheating. That era passed after changing the HG. I don't pull caravans. My VC fan is from 300TDI which is a direct fit bought new , genuine about 2 years back. The radiator is the one came from the factory yet it's fine. I just want to get rid of the habit of eyeing the temp...

    P38A M51 diesel cooling improvement.

Mod done without removing VC fan. Found a radiator fan of a diesel BMW 320 - E46 (marked 400W ) with that I intend to replace the VC fan. That demands about 35 A and with full load , (AC fans, blowers, ABS pump, wipers, head lights high beam, fogs etc) will the alternator (105 A VALEO) stand...

A photo of this unusual dot will help.

Thanks Keith. Why strictly no 'Lucar ' connectors?

In addition to low efficiency of the radiator, viscous fans inability to do the job at low RPMs is a reason , I think. After removing the viscous fan installing a set of electric fans to support the AC fans should help. Seen VW Tourag 3.0 TDI V6, having no VC fan but two electric fans.

That's tempting. Here the temps are around 30 C but in April it goes up to about 35 C max. But in a similar situation like you mentioned, my gearbox would have cried- 'gearbox overheat'-check hand book'. Even 1/2 hr in very slow traffic, flat road, it cries.

Quote; I have run with the viscous fan and cowl removed for a few years now without a problem even in hot weather ............ unquote, hot weather means around 35 C or higher?

    Unusual electrical problem- diesel P38

Incidentally, HEVAC display seems more brighter now and ABS pump too back to normal operation. All seems well except the instrument cluster.

    Instrument cluster

Finally, drilled few holes in mounting points and used plastic wire clips to hold the cluster. Also, placed some foam material between the cluster and top part of the dash. Hopefully, it will solve the problem for good.

Thanx. Also, will 3M double tape help? Can I see a picture , how to set the steel mounting brackets. I'm confused how to align those.

    Instrument cluster

Hi all, removed the instrument cluster today as there was something rattling inside. To my horror, cluster mounts are broken & triangular steel supports on both sides have separated completely from the plastic inner mounts. The cluster is just lying there .:eek::eek: Now what are my...

Checked all the connectors at the RH FRONT foot well. Nothing serious there. Anyway refitted after spraying a good amount of contact cleaner. Also, removed the instrument cluster as there was a rattle coming. Disaster...............:eek::eek: Opened a new thread on that.

    Marty - you are referring C101 , I guess.

    Unusual electrical problem- diesel P38

Charge lamp cct & D+ cct are two different ccts, as per RAVE. BECM senses voltage reversal from D+ cct and then shuts the charge lamp , otherwise the charge lamp will continue to glow.

    Unusual electrical problem- diesel P38

Good news guys. Removed the C114 connector at BECM. Checked continuity from C114-15 to D+ and RL12 -1. At the C114-15 too there is +ve voltage. Hence assumed that between C114-15 and D+ , some additional thing happening.. Started from D+ end and removed rubber cover & voila, some one had...

Fitted the old fuse box, no change. BECM ? C114-15 is the line that supplies to Alternator D+ and also the RL12 - 1
