    Towing a caravan

I know that this isn't the answer to your question, but as you are new to towing I will add my two penneth worth, gained from painful experience with weaving / snaking with a trailer. Make sure that your towball is low enough, many 4x4 can be a bit high which can upset the handling of trailers...

    Handbrake Out of Adjustment?

The standard hand brake is well up to the job if properly adjusted and maintained. The shoes very rarely wear out because the brake doesn't get used when the vehicle is moving, so there is nothing to wear the friction material. The back plate has a slot at the bottom of the output housing which...

    injector chuffing

As others have said, keep an eye on it, leaking injectors can let carbon build up around the injectors and jam them in. I have seen pictures of vans being lifted off the ground while trying to get stuck injectors out.

Rear brake locking after new brakes.

110 fronts are four-piston callipers, the ones in the photo are two-piston callipers and look right for the rear.

Rear brake locking after new brakes.

Your rear brakes should not lock-up under heavy braking, this is dangerous, that's why there is a pressure limiting valve. I would suspect that the side that isn't locking-up may not be operating properly. Is your new brake pipe kinked and restricting flow to one brake and putting all the...

    Hydraulic Press

I bought a cheap 20 tonne press for not much more than £120 a few years ago, I wouldn't be without it. It makes a huge difference when changing bearings and bushes. It is a lot easier than destroying vices and other botches. Top tip, if you have bits of close fitting tube for pressing bearings...

    1989 110 power steering conversion

I used a 300tdi Discovery steering box on mine when I fitted a 300tdi engine. You need to fit a Defender drop arm with ball joint, I don't think that the one off the manual box will do. There is nothing else that requires changing, although some pipes may need lengthening. I think that I will...

    Alternators

Before you start spending money, check that the noise isn't being caused by contamination on the fan-belt. Spray a little bit of water on the belt and see if the noise goes.

R380 gearbox and 300TDI engine in to a 90? Possible?

I would use whichever is the best gearbox. You can fit the 300tdi to your existing gearbox, but you have to get new engine mounts, modify the exhaust and some of the coolant and PAS pipes. Google Glencoyne Engineering, they have plenty of information.

R380 gearbox and 300TDI engine in to a 90? Possible?

No, you use the stumpy bellhousing to fit the R380 to a pre-300tdi 4-cylinder 90/110. The 300tdi bellhousing is the same on Defender and Discovery. In STANDARD 300tdi installation, the engine is 6 inches further forward than earlier models. You could use the stumpy bellhousing, and you would...

If you have fried your alternator, you can get replacement voltage regulators for a fraction of the cost of an alternator.

R380 gearbox and 300TDI engine in to a 90? Possible?

You will need a 300tdi front section, the middle and rear sections are far too small. As full 300 exhaust is the only real option, although you may need to modify the mounting brackets.

    300tdi restoration

If you bin the self-levelling unit you must also replace the rear springs as they are a lot softer than the non-assisted suspension. I had a trials motor built from a shortened Range Rover chassis, I retained the self levelling unit and it worked well in extreme conditions.

R380 gearbox and 300TDI engine in to a 90? Possible?

If you want the 300tdi in the factory position, you need to mount the transfer box 2-inches further forward than the 2.5N/A. Use the Discovery gearbox cross-member and front prop, and copy the Discovery engine mounts. You don't retain the 2.5N/A bolt in cross-member. You will need a 300tdi rear...

Hey all, need a little help re charging

Have you connected the trigger wire to the correct terminal assuming that your replacement alternator is for a Discovery? The Discovery alternator has an extra terminal for the rev-counter. The pulleys should interchange between 300tdi alternators, if the pulley does not have a flange, there...
