I picked up my entire 1981 2.25l s3 109 on an eBay Auction about 12 years ago for just £550. Ran great and is Still my main car today with only the usual wear and tear items replaced over the years as and when needed or I fancy tinkering. Now it seems the engine alone is worth more than that...

The parts catalogue has good diagrams in it for various early and late type 109s so worth a look to see where the brackets should go on the exhaust if the pics match yours. As said there are lots of different versions out there. The mounts should obviously be placed above the brackets.

Mine stil has a bit of play - not as much as yours but I just left it. If you could find the right size Bush then guess there’s no harm fitting it but I’d be tempted to refurb and check the mixture works ok before bothering.

I got a refurb kit from zenith for mine A few years back and it comes with new butterfly (As well as jets etc) and when stripped and cleaned the housing it worked a treat. Not too pricey either I seem to remember. Can’t say anything about Entire replacement though

Remember that that 6 degrees figure is also the static time - as you said you're checking it with a strobe I assume you're checking the timing at idle which will mean the advance should be greater than 6. By how much will depend on what idle speed you're at and, as the others above have implied...
