Series 3 Matching a half shaft to a stub axle query.

Both shafts connected by the uj have passed through the swivel pin housing/bearing and oil seal and are engaged in the diff. When the stub axle is fitted the half shaft bears against the inside of the stub axle. Is this correct?

Series 3 Matching a half shaft to a stub axle query.

Thanks for the reply James, I should have made it clearer So, when the shaft passes through the axle, it comes up hard against the inner flange of the stub axle. Just metal against metal and lubricant of course. Peter

Series 3 Matching a half shaft to a stub axle query.

Hi fellows, I got a couple of outer stub shafts and prior to fitting I noticed that there is no oil seal in the stub axle 599827? Is this correct ? it looks as if the shaft runs metal to metal with the axle? I cant see any bearings or oil seal in the book. cheers peter

Series 3 Matching a half shaft to a stub axle query.

Thanks for the reply Wildefalcon, Perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned the year 1983 because earlier parts have been fitted. We have the stub axle 599827 fitted and Heystee hub and disc fitted with bearings, bolted up and rotates smoothly. but no drive shafts fitted. They are sitting in a rack...

Series 3 SWB 1983 new brake line fitting query.

Hi Citizen, Thanks for the input. I had seen that info a long time ago but couldn't find it again. I have since searched on their site and found it, I was under the impression that a Defender M/C couldn't fit onto the servo of a series 3 that is why my son and I was going to use the series...

Series 3 SWB 1983 new brake line fitting query.

Hi Rodeo and Blackburn, thanks for the reply. Heystee supplied the swivel house and hub for Defender discs and calipers. They did not mention that it was required to change the master cylinder or anything else. Regarding the brake lines I wil probaably put new Series ones back with a union in...

What have you done to your Landie today.

Drilled and retapped the threads of my galved bulkhead. Smoothed down any sharp points of galv. scraped out dirt and muck in any of the corners. Ready for the t wash. Don't know when I will have time for that, swmbo wants me to skim over a boarded up doorway.

Rebuild Advice - What do I need?

Are you doing this in a garage?I If it is big enough, then build shelves and devote them for different parts of the job so you dont get them mixed up. And save the old parts until you are sure the new parts you have bought are the same. Have fun.

    Series 3 Newly galvanized bulkhead

I will say that the photographs look worse than the actual finish. It must be the flash. There are a few sharp spikes of zinc which do need filing down, but where I welded down the outsides of the footwell near the back of the engine I did not clean up the welds, and the zinc seems to have...

    Series 3 Newly galvanized bulkhead

I have a lot of cleaning to do before I make any final decision. Holes to drill and tap etc and cleaning out dirt which is trapped in some places. As I am refitting a kitchen as well it may take some time.

    Series 3 Newly galvanized bulkhead

I think I will try a couple of (hidden) places with the air disc sander and gently reduce it. If it it improves it good. If not then I will leave it, give it a t wash and hand brush epoxy primer.

Hi folks Any recommendations for seam sealant? I am looking at brushing it on. So many on the market, am going to use after epoxy primer on the newly galved bulkhead. Cheers Peter

    Series 3 Newly galvanized bulkhead

That seems like mine. After the welding and cleaning up, I gave them a couple of quick coats of primer and they looked good. After the shotblast I cold see the welds again but after galving they stand out like a sore thumb. I'll get some pics up later. cheers all
