    P38A P38 Wheel bearing failure?

Looking for a second-hand hub at the mo. Will put that on for now and order a Timken or something to put into the original at a later date. Do not seem to be any second-hand ones out there on the usual sites. Do if anybody in the south/southwest has one spare, please let me know.

    P38A P38 Wheel bearing failure?

OK thanks. I thought as much. Time to think. Will it survive the journey to my favourite 4x4 mechanic who has the kit to do this, or maybe buy a new hub, easier and quicker and I can do it at home..... Unless I take the hub off and take it to him with a new bearing. I will see wht he suggests...

    P38A P38 Wheel bearing failure?

Hi Quick update. Lifted near-side front and the wheel wobbles badly on the hub. I reckon the bearing is totally shot. Off-side front is fine, with no movement. I take it all is well to replace the bearings or hub on the faulty side only? Just need to work out is it more cost-effective to...

    P38A P38 Wheel bearing failure?

Hi All Long time no login. Things have changed....... Anyway. I suspect a front wheel bearing has failed on my 1996 P38 4.6 HSE. It's been running really great for ages, just as I said that something needs attention. On a drive yesterday evening and on the way home there was suddenly a...

P38A Stuck in Low Range Again

Hi Guys Sorry for the silence on the progress. Here is an update. While waiting for another replacement motor I decided to strip both down clean them up and make 1 good out of the 2. Both had broken plastic/rubber (whatever it was) spacers around the end stop screw. I fitted a small black...

P38A Stuck in Low Range Again

Here is an update. The secondhand ratio motor I bought is dead. No movement at all. When I apply volts directly to the motor (either way around) there is no movement, just a small spark. So I guess it is seized. I rotated the TB spindle manually while holding the output shafts (one at a time)...

That is an interesting point. I also found this which gives an interesting description of the internals...

P38A Stuck in Low Range Again

That was interesting. Thanks for sharing it. Looks like fully clockwise should be Hi then. The shift cam assembly makes sense, I wondered what was happening inside. On mine it seems to be really free movement through a lot of the range, then in the last part of the movement there is some...

P38A Stuck in Low Range Again

Hi Yes I have read that a few times. But I will read it again and hope that a tiny gem of info comes to me enough to pop a light on in my head. Cheers

P38A Stuck in Low Range Again

The spindle on the TB turns, but as it is an awkward shape you need to use pliers or something to get a grip on it. I then cunningly decided to use the old spindle and gear from the original motor and slip it onto the spindle, that way your fingers have a much better mechanical advantage on the...

P38A Stuck in Low Range Again

Hi Yes it's in lo. Whines when driving and not able to go above 30. Diags tell me Lo too. I need to know where Hi is, the mark I put on the motor seems impossible to move the TB spindle to.

P38A Stuck in Low Range Again

OK I am stumped. I could really do with some help if anybody at all can please? I have no idea what to do and I am close to giving up now after a few weeks of no progress. Second-hand motor seems to do very little, so I assume it could be faulty. All I get from it as it changes from Lo to Hi...

P38A Stuck in Low Range Again

I have seen the switch positions and what they relate to, but what position does the actual TB shaft need to be in to start with? Where is High when looking at the selector on the TB? It seems to matter as if you get it on wrong and the motor spins up to put it into what the ECU believes is the...

P38A Stuck in Low Range Again

Hi I tried putting a fuse in F11, Transfer neutral came up as expected, then I selected netral and moved to high range, lots of beeps and Select neutal was back. Tried again removing F11, all exactly the same. I suspect a bad motor. It was sluggish when powered up directly off of a battery. It...

P38A Stuck in Low Range Again

Hi I originally posted this problem quite a while ago, then the issue came up again. So I updated the original thread and only just noticed it is not listed as new, recent or unread. I thought it best to post it again here and ref the old thread too so it ties in. Most recent post on the...

    P38A Stuck in low range

Thread resurrection. Oh well, it lasted about 3-4 years. Started getting the Select Neutral message again, more and more frequently. Then permanently. Taken the motor off and found this in the pic. Is it broken? I thought the little brown lump was grease at first. It's the same colour as the...

P38A Trailer lights - strange behaviour - earth fault?

Ok it was dirty and corroded contacts in the socket. a gentle rub over with a fine needle file and sprayed out with electrical contact cleaner and all is ok, except for reverse. Will look at that more. Cheers all.

P38A Trailer lights - strange behaviour - earth fault?

The trailer is fairly new and a hired one. It was ok last week apparently and I borrowed a light board to plug into the P38 and it did the same. Do you know where the earth is bolted to the chassis? Is it on the rear lights? I have seen something mentioning RHS. Thanks

P38A Trailer lights - strange behaviour - earth fault?

Hi All I attached a hired trailer to my 1996 Gems P38 and all is ok except the trailer lights are behaving oddly. Standard old style LR wiring on the original socket. Using a 7-13 pin adaptor as the trailer is newer. When the hazard lights are on all lights at the rear flash. Braking seems to...
