Further research has revealed that the 110 is actually a pre-production model, first registered on 1st December 1982 and used by Land Rover, presumably as a demonstrator.

Fuel gauges are famously idiosyncratic and individual and you have to get to know what yours means when it says full or nearly empty. You might change expensive parts and find you still have a problem; just a different one!
