Much advice needed! (WARNING, NEWBIE IDIOT!!!!)

Of course your first hand experience may differ depending on roof racks etc as you say. From my personal experience, a standard RRC uses less fuel than a standard disco (both 3.9 V8s, despite the fact that the RRC was auto) both without roofracks etc. Now high 20s is what Ive heard for diesel...

Much advice needed! (WARNING, NEWBIE IDIOT!!!!)

People say nearly 40mpg on a run, Im doubtful, so 30mpg ish. My disco gets 14, my relatives auto 3.9 rrc gets 17, people claim high 20s from their diesel discos, (say 28 for ease of maths). So going from petrol disco to diesel disco doubles MPG, if the same is true for the RRC (and I see no...

Thanks all. Main reason for switching is MPG, I simply cannot afford the use the disco on any sort of trip, and if I wanted to go somewhere remote, it only does 300 miles on a tank, and each jerry can only adds 70 miles, whereas the 200tdi RRC does more like 600 miles to a tank and each jerry...

Decided to get a diesel RRC instead. Found a couple of 200tdi manuals. Trying to arrange viewing tomorrow. Other than rust and leaks, anything else worth paying particular attention to? Thanks!

Im going to try and respond in sections, so we'll see how it goes. Okay, so if I go for a 2.25, the blocks are externally identical, correct? So that shouldnt be hard at all? No harder than any job involving removing the standard engine to do a job like changing the clutch? Is it the same story...

Thanks, Ill have a look at that website. Ive got some spanners, screw drivers, socket set, and even a multimeter! I assume some digital callipers, and some other basic 1950s tools would be useful too. Aerodynamics. Not to be pedantic, but the resistive force is proportional to a variable factor...

Surely it cant be that bad? If I put it on a trailer and towed it with my disco, Im sure it would do 70-80 (thats the top end of 3rd gear) and thats a 5 ton thing. (Yes, I know weight has no bearing on top speed on a flat surface, theoretically) I can probably buy a series 3 gearbox, if the...

Thanks all. Im doing a bit og a switcheroo. Currently Ive got 2 80s/90s cars that are OK at being normal cars, but still somewhat special/fun/hobby cars. Im thinking of selling both, and getting one normal boring car (diesel skoda, might get it remapped, whatever) and a extra-special land rover...

Nope - Im relatively sure I want a series. And Im certain I want a diesel. The ambulance body is a lucky coincidence, its the only one within reasonable bidget nearby. Not sure if I care about the absence of syncros on 1st and 2nd. Overdrive is a necesary addition for motorway driving so Ill...

Im not after a rocket, if I was, Ide keep my disco. I just want a powerplant that will get it cruising at a respectable speed (i.e. not being in the way of HGVs) and preferably run on diesel, for better MPG and possibly run on veg oil. Also I want it to be very easy to work on, and be very easy...

I did. I bought a disco. Now Im about to sell it and buy a 60s S2. I just want to know the best route for running it on diesel, and making it go uphill. Ive already figured its going to cost me an extra £1000-1500 for parabolic springs and an overdrive, both of which I know Ill want/need.

Yeah okay turbocharging the 2.25 is a rubbish idea. I see many old landys with perkins/mazda/daihatsu/isuzu/etc engines. I always thought it was sacriligious, but perhaps it isnt. Can someone confirm the nature of the 2.5NA engine? OHC or pushrod? (Bigger 2.25 or 19j missing a turbo?) Thanks

Much advice needed! (WARNING, NEWBIE IDIOT!!!!)

Okay, so the 19j sucks. The 2.25 is a pushrod engine, without a timing belt, correct? The 2.5TD 19j has a timing belt, therefore I presume its an OHC engine. Is the 2.5NA the same engine as the TD, minus the turbo? Or is it an enlarged version of the 2.25? What about turbocharging one of the NA...

Thanks, very interesting. I have a friend with a series 3 109 with the 2.25 NA diesel. That really is a little down on power personally. The 2.5TD (19j?) is the one that sounds best to me, despite its bad reputation. The TDI sounds like its more work than its worth in comparison, given it needs...

Alright, so a series 2 ambulance has come up for sale not far from me, 2.25 petrol, army green, the usual. Not a bad price either. Im getting bored of the disco. I dont want to cut the roof, and theres no other way to sleep in it, and its costing me a fortune in fuel, so Im thinking of selling...

Mad LWB disco idea (Now ultimate overlanding disco thread of rubbish

Quick question, dont want to add clutter by making another thread so thought Ide put it here. 1996 Discovery 1 V8i manual. The rev counter doesnt work. When I bought it, it worked fine. Then after a while it went very wobbly over 3000 rpm. One day I changed the HT leads after a friend snapped...

Heavier than standard? Thats very interesting! I suppose the aluminium body vs steel tray isnt the only difference. Bumpers, big tyres, roof rack etc

Thats awesome. Have you got a build thread or something? From what Ive gathered, its all about the body mounts.
