Mad LWB disco idea (Now ultimate overlanding disco thread of rubbish

Just a hypothetical question, are tubular front ends legal? If so, would using a tubular front end on a disco body and defender 130 chassis mean that I could retain the 130 reg and not need an IVA? Purely hypothetical because Ive not got the skill or the tools to do it, and Ive certainly not got...

Im off the series idea now, having been laning with a friend who has an '82 109. Chassis extension idea was inspired by the australians, when they turn landcruisers and patrols into pickups they move the rear axle back. Would be very cool, and its been done, with a disco, but too difficult...

Thanks all for the advice and input so far. Instead of starting another thread, I thought Ide just keep this one. Now, as much as I love my V8, its using too much petrol, and I want to do a long trip in the next few years, so more economy is needed, both for cost reasons, and for longer range...

Yes, I know the wheelbases are both 100", but what about the bit that sticks out behind the rear axle? The boot floor (with seats up) is bigger, or certainly longer, in a range rover than in a disco 1. The question is, how much so? Thanks!

So I can lie down in it.... not thinking about altering anything too much. Although come to think of it, a split folding tailgate would be nice.....

Good news! My Disco passed its MoT! Bad news - Ive done some significant paint damage to it on strata florida, and Im tempted to raptor it. Also, if anyone is thinking of doing strata - SNORKEL! Ive got a muddy air filter and an airbox thats very obviously had water in it. And dislocation cones...

Yep, not possible really. And it doesnt look THAT good. Doing strata tomorrow in my disco, then its getting its MoT on Monday. Ive realised that for what a good 109 will cost, I could do A LOT of modifications to my disco - including a chassis extension, if thats what I decide. Although I rather...

Why buy one abroad? Firstly, driving it back is a bit of an adventure. Secondly, this one is very cheap, and Im told its solid, and Ill be sure to get some good pictures of all the rusty bits before proceeding.

Alright, now the big question. A RHD 1972 109, originally registered in Tanzania, currently registered and stored in Norway. How do I drive it to the UK? I can get temporary plates in Norway for £30 a day, but I cant find out if I can drive it in the EU on these plates. Any advice? (Not going to...

Quick question, are all the series fuel tanks the same? How big is a 109 diesel S3 tank? Will it fit in a suitcase? Thanks!

Its quite a long way outside my budget, and just a little too ugly, for me to go near it. But a similar one would still be not OK? Another super quick question, the bit that the back doors on a 109 bolt to (the doors to the 2nd row of seats). What is that bit made of? If its steel, Im guessing...

Yes, agree on the parts front. I dont think the UK delivered ones are left hand drive? Yes the PS10 has a 2.8 turbo diesel. The 4wd system is also different, its the traditional 2wd - 4wd hi - 4wd low, which isnt as good as the normal LR one, but pretty similar to a series.

Sold S3s under liscence using the santana name until LR went coil when then 90/110 came out, then LR wouldnt let them copy their homework anymore, so santana carries on building and developing the S3 platform, using parabolic springs and whichever engine was supplied by the company they has a...

Its being sold by someone who has a bunch of them, and hes loosing the space, hence the supposed reason for sale, and why hes got an overdrive too, but its currently in another landy. The "good" thing is that its the most expensive one he has listed, which implies its the one with all the best...

Yep, alright, the overdrive installment is out of the question then really. The entire deal hangs on him taking my subaru in part exchange, and Ive had a "probably" but not a "certainly" response - but we'll wait and see. Watch this space!

So, Ive found another 109, this time a safari (5 door SW) and the seller seems willing to take my subaru in part exchange. Its a diesel (which is my prefered choice) and it doesnt have overdrive, but one if available for additional cost. Its had a galvanised chassis, but Im told the bulkhead...

I mean, looking at it I would say that any dodgy doings happened a long time ago, it looks like its been left to rot for a while. Yes, V5 says its a 109, V5 matches the numberplate, numperplate is stuck on an 88, so theres no way that the chassis numbers match in a way thay is legit. The...
