    Discovery 3.9 v8 - rebuilds, reliability, options….

Currently, nothing starts. Both have dead batteries, and with a jump, one turns over, and the other starts if you fiddle with the starter motor wire, at least that was the case when I looked last, which was last year. The manual one had MoT and was driven daily until the end of 2022, everything...

Id be very supprised if they changed them, although they might be different depending on the gearbox? Blocks are identical, just bored out for the 3.9s

Yep, 5th is taller. Transfer boxes on all the discos are the same, are they not? Defenders are shorter. Basically, if I scrap my discos, is it worth me keeping my gearbox for its taller 5th gear, or can I just rebuild any future R380 I might own with a taller 5th gear?

I think its 2540kg for an RRC and 2720kg for a D1, or thereabouts. Also another random question, if youre rebuilding an R380 from a 300tdi, can you use 5th gear from a V8, and is it easy to get hold of the parts?

The shell isnt that bad, its been welded before. Also, why change body type? Arent they both the same catagory? Only downside I see is loosing payload.

Your work carpark must be quite safe then, I presume? Or have you some other theft deterrant? A large sack of horse manure in the back?

Another quick question - will a facelift D1 body fit on a RRC chassis? And in that case I could use the RRC reg (possibly tax exempt) and use carbs and no cats. Or even an earlier disco chassis, I think 1993 is the cutoff date for cats, and therefore carbs.

    Discovery 3.9 v8 - rebuilds, reliability, options….

Theres generally a good way to tell. If the person selling it to you can tell you how and why it works in a way that makes logical sence, then its probably correct. Top hat liners definately work - theres no question about that. Really what you're asking is, "is there anything wrong with the...

Lovely. I was tempted by a twinscroll but the cost of a 6 speed manual was 3 times what I paid for my 3.0 one. Also tempted by BMWs and Audis, but only for the 6-pot diesel engines, and I dont do enough miles to part with my Legacy at the moment. On that note, have you considered non-land rover...

    Discovery 3.9 v8 - rebuilds, reliability, options….

Thats not really true. Some slip liners, some crack blocks, some blow headgaskets, crankshafts wear out, etc etc. If I had to guess, most rover v8s that were ever made have either been recycled or still exist in a mechanically useable state but with crap electric components or a rusty car around...

    Discovery 3.9 v8 - rebuilds, reliability, options….

I suppose it all comes down to what exactly you intend to do. If an engine you can see running from a breakers yard is £400, and you have the tools, space, etc to fit it yourself, and all youre doing is running a "sports" camshaft, a loud exhaust and a remap, and driving it on the road and...

I have also read highly of RPi, so it may well be worth having a look into them. Out of interest, roughly how much does it cost to have top hat lines fitted? How many standard blocks could you get for that money? Ive got 2 here with your name on them, but you have to take the cars with them...

Series 3 The Ultimate Series Daily Driver

A V8 will drink fuel, I daily drove my 3.9 efi discovery manual and I averaged 14mpg, and that was on A roads, on standard size AT tyres. 12mpg around town, and that was averaged over half a tank or so. Id imagine a series, being slightly taller and given how badly the doors seem to fit on every...

Just a quick question incase someone here knows. IVA for chassis extensions - is it exactly the same for commercial and non-commercial vehicles? I read a decade+ old thread on a ford transit forum that said it was different/easier for commercial vehicles, and if thats the case then does anyone...

Id drive the series youve got currently every day for 6 months and see if you still want to daily drive one. Registering a vehicle built from parts

Its simple, if youve got a logbook, vin plate, numberplates, etc, and a land rover that matches that logbook, even if everything steel has dissolved, you can buy a new chassis, bulkhead, etc and voila, all is well. If you havnt got anything with a vin number or numberplate, i.e, youve got a pile...

Well, I suppose I could have waited a year, paid the exam board myself, and re-sat them. The norm is to do another year in school/collage. The point that the exams could have been cancelled again still stands though, so it wasnt really a valid plan at the time, not that it had even crossed my...

Yep, my thoughts exactly. Honestly unsure. Ive absolutely no use for them, but theyre not really in the way, nor are they costing me anything to have just sit there. Because Id have had to re-apply for the apprenticeship, with zero guarantee Id get it the second time around. Also, there was no guarantee of a propper exam the next year, so it could easilly have been an absolute waste. Furthermore, most of my mates were off to uni, and I couldnt wait to be...
