Excellent. Well, perhaps that's a poor choice of word. Still plodding on, though and that gives me some well needed encouragement. Can't help you with the door motors. Mine have been behaving. I can however offer some insight into the rear door handle. Mine failed on the handle itself rather...

All gone a bit quiet, Rob. You still running?

    Project: The impossible utopia - Freelander S TD4 3 door (2002)

To preserve the alleged 'warranty' on the turbo, we're compelled to do some checks. These checks involved lots more bits coming off the hippo. After some resistance from the most awkward bolt (inside the hatch in the wheelarch) the bumper is removed to reach the intercooler. Sump pan off...

Turbo done. The new unit arrived but without the gaskets and I'd really had enough of waiting to get this done. Out came the wire wheel and the gasket paper along with copious liquid gasket. We're golden. Or we're not. I genuinely have no idea whether it will work long term. Photos from two...

    Project: The impossible utopia - Freelander S TD4 3 door (2002)

I hear you, @Colthebrummie and some days I really wonder why we do it. I reckon with regular maintenance and sensible preventative work, the TD4 would be as reliable as anything else. This one had clearly been neglected for a long time. Some simple jobs on the previous owner's part and a bit of...

    Project: The impossible utopia - Freelander S TD4 3 door (2002)

I'm tumescent with anticipation of the new turbo which obviously isn't here. Most of the other required bits are, though and we've err'd considerably on the side of caution. New solenoid, MAP sensor, silicone vacuum hose and turbo to intercooler hose. Hopefully it digs me out of that hole. The...

    Project: The impossible utopia - Freelander S TD4 3 door (2002)

So obviously the turbo has cooked and lost oil seal. Vanes looked OK but we have more sideways play than is best. I'm being optimistic and saying that's OK, we've caught it before any major damage occured. (I want to insert the whilstling emoji here ;) ) It's definitley leaking. Ordered a...

The joys. Took it off the road after it was wildly over revving without delivering any power on the hills and that. I guess I'll need a new clutch? Got it in the garage with the engine shaking like a defecating dog (took a video but can't put me hands on it). Tells me the injectors are filthy...

Gulp. The pallet looks salvagable ;)

Nice build. Envious ;) Nice to see some imagination going into the finish and detailing.

    Hello from Bedfordshire...

Welcome aboard. Nice little collection you have. Tyre and rim combo on the hippo looks cool. Much prefer the steelies. You know what they are?

I know you're right. False economies and all that. I can get one for seventy quid through work so might just do it. The manifold still isn't as clean as I'd like it so erring on the side of 'I can wreck this cheap one until I can get the inside cleaner' ;) Did yours have a dunk in some wet...

    Project: The impossible utopia - Freelander S TD4 3 door (2002)

Today's news is the MAP sensor has finally given up after a few successful months of recovery-via-cleaning. Makes for interesting driving. In a dangerous way. No-brand one on order for testing given how much a 'Genuine' Bosch one will set you back. I'm only going to stick it into a dirty hole :D...

Feck, Rob. You've been through mill with that one, lad. And I 'aven't even finished reading the whole thread. Thought my project was risky but you seem to have defined it. Props for your tenacity :) So many familiar problems, though

As I remember, that's basically his conclusion. Unless you've got dollar bills coming out yer bum 'ole, there really is no value in it.
