    P38A Alternative Thermostat - V8

I think I'm not explaining myself properly. The top three pipes are physically connected, I just assumed that an open thermostat would block the bypass hose off (top middle one). But on the one that just arrived today doesn't do this, which means water will still bypass, as well as go through...

    P38A Alternative Thermostat - V8

I do believe I no longer have overheating issues, however I would feel more comfortable knowing I had a larger buffer in my engine temperature. This engine seems very sensitive to any cooling defect and I wonder if it's because it runs so hot as standard.

    P38A Alternative Thermostat - V8

Are you sure the thermostat is supposed to operate this way. I assumed it would, but I can confirm that if I heat my new one that arrived today, the top bypass inlet does not close off and remains open.

    P38A Alternative Thermostat - V8

After my recent overheating issue, one the part I'm changing just in case is the thermostat. I've just gone for an aftermarket one. I was disappointed that I couldn't get one that operates at a lower temperature without buying something like this aluminium cased one for £400. Also it's out of...

P38A Head Gasket Probably Blown - Advice

The steel seal stuff that others have mentioned has a similar consistency to water, and only cures if exposed to hot gases, so if it gets into narrow passages it shouldn't react or cause any blockages. I've got a vacuum and pressure testing kit arriving today, so I'm going to see if I can find...

P38A Head Gasket Probably Blown - Advice

Yes it was low speed. Probably 25mph up a slight hill (a lot of 20mph zones around me). It was also only about half a mile from a 5 minute stop where I picked up my kid form nursery, so the engine shouldn't have been that hot to start with (unless it overheated on the way to nursery and I didn't...

I checked this the other day and it was clear.

P38A Head Gasket Probably Blown - Advice

This may be true, but if I do have the heads off, I was as well go a step further and get the rear main seal done. Thanks.

P38A Head Gasket Probably Blown - Advice

Ok, so I think my head gasket on my MY2000 P38 4.0 V8 has gone. :( I've had the car about a year, and in that time, the temp needle has never gone beyond half way. I noticed about 2 weeks ago my expansion tank was almost empty. I assumed I just hadn't been checking it, so topped it up and...

P38A Making sense of HVAC error codes

Might buy a handful of these potentiometers just have handy when I start pulling things apart. https://www.conrad.com/p/piher-pt15nv02-103a2020-s-trimmer-linear-025-w-10-k-270-1-pcs-432024 I noticed here: http://www.stockholmviews.com/p38/index.html#hevac it mentions that there are two...

P38A Making sense of HVAC error codes

I get the book symbol often on my HVAC. If I leave both sides in LO, then the book doesn't appear. I can change the distribution buttons with no issue. When the book symbol comes on, it disappears after a restart, so I believe the motors are all winding back to their start position correctly...

P38A Passenger electric window not working

my window is now working. I don't have a NanoCom and the rsw diagnostics I use doesn't work monitor windows si it was trial and error. Luckily, the first thing I checked was the problem. It was the switches pack (thanks DataTek for suggesting I start here). I pulled the board out, and before...

P38A Passenger electric window not working

I'm about to start diagnosing why my passenger electric window isn't working. I figure it's either the wiring, center switch pack, motor or the computer box thing behind the door card. To save me some time, does anyone have some tips, or order to check things in. I assume the switches are all...

    Dreaded MOT day!

I remember taking my old, but new to me Lexus to KwikFit for an MOT. Passed no problem, but they failed to notice that half of the exhaust rubbers were missing, so a few months on the exhaust snapped in half on me. Would have rather had a fail for such a quick and easy fix.

    Insurance premiums !!

Surely a P38 must be the least stolen car. It's 50/50 whether you can get around the security system even if you are the owner with the original keys.

    Insurance premiums !!

At what age do the usual classic car insurance companies consider something like a P38 to be a classic. When I tried to get a quote for my MY2000 I just got a response saying they couldn't quote me. No reason why.

    P38A P38 Leaking Oil

My money would be on the rear main seal unless there's visible oil higher up the engine. What grade oil are you using. If it is the rear main seal, then using 20W-50 won't hurt and may slow it down enough to live with whilst you find time to sort it.

P38A Mondial vs Hurricane wheels value

You do have one of the better colours though. I bought green as it was mechanical sound but was ideally looking for blue. But the colour has grown on me a lot.

P38A Mondial vs Hurricane wheels value

I think Hurricanes are by far the nicer looking Alloy. Comets look a bit chavy And the Modials look like they have come of a cheap plastic Ferrari toy car. Sorry if I've insulted somebody's wheels. We all have different tastes.
