and that's pretty much how I've had it for the last year, but thought I'd improve it, alas, it's a tad better now, but still rough and will probably be left like this for at least another year. I do this for fun you know!

Yep, new plugs at same time as new distro , coil and leads.

I'm at a loss what else to do with air and fuel. I did the advance to pinking.. taking the head off means I could check all the followers are good, or even if the cam is worn, but that's a long way off.

holy smoke. Started her and my garden filled with white smoke. The redex was working then! Took her for a spin this morning and clouded the village in smoke too. Took about 3miles before it stopped. Still lumpy, link to video below. However, it feels a little better but still not right...

Yeah, got it to about 10 before, still not happy, but I flooded her with redex tonight, tomorrow I'll give her an Italian service.

Ah, pinking, that I understand. Thank you sir

Jeez, just stuck 20ml of redex down each plug hole and about 40ml down carb.. fired it up and I can't see the garden for white smoke. Also running more wobbly, gonna make a cuppa and come back when the dust settles to start her up again.

Ok, put it all back together today. The distro clamps down nicer and the skew gear is now in the right place (2h I'll never get back). This is the best I can get it to run, around 10°BTDC, cannot get it to the 6° mark, so it's a guess. It's an improvement and I've been tinkering around with...

Hard to say, it drives, I'd guess no. Certainly stutters if you put your foot down. Gutless, but it is anyway, certainly not smooth

Since I brought the car 1 y ago. I lived with it, and to be fair, it's rough running really, not just idle. Just not noticed as much when revving engine. It's now running slightly worse, so maybe a rethink on cam shaft position is needed. All valves are opening and shutting at the right...

    2.25 petrol rough idle

having just stared with my brother at it for 2hrs. We decided to look at other things, the timing is right. Although, I do still want to clock the top of the piston to double check to be 100% sure we are spot on. My brother has an old series engine kicking about and that too has the 90deg...

The distro is new and does what it should. Ie, fits, rotates, sparks etc... but I'm all ears for other thoughts.

I'm assuming it's there to stop it fouling on the block, used to have this issue with a rootes engine I built.

    2.25 petrol rough idle

Right, put it back together and it's still rough, however, instead of the timing being an inch or so (nowhere near the scale) after TDC when running, it's now an inch or so before TDC. If I rotate distro to get it to run the best I can it's mike's out still! Very odd. So, I took the distro out...

An interested thread found here by my brother... (he too can't get any sleep wondering why a cam would have a 180 out key) https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/valve-cam-timing-petrol-2-25-am-i-over-thinking-this.369908/page-2

I too am certainly no towing expert and I don't want to be either, so I'll leave the correct answer to them and explain what I think. For recovering my own vehicle when it broke down (wiring issues fixed now), I went out and brought 2 of the jate rings, see pic. There are locations on the...

so, I've moved the chain one tooth round so the line is at least dead on...even though it's 180° out. Next step will be to pull the cam shaft but before that, I'm putting it back together this weekend and testing it. If it's solved the rough running then great, if not, then it's time to take...

Yep, did the piston up thing. Definately cam shaft 180 out. But maybe it's only a tooth out and an odd cam. Book reference a dual keyway sometimes, but this has one. I'm going with the 1 tooth out and I'm not going to install it as per book, it'll be 180 out

With #4 rocking and #1closed, piston at top and the cam cog mark is dead aligned to the reference stud hole, (albeit 180 out), pop the cover back on to ref the TDC and i get this. I think the chain is a tooth or 2 out and i should ignore the 180 thing
