If the fan was on all the time it should never overheat. It may have failed full stop. On a run the air passing through the rad will be enough to fight the engine heat, it's when you come to slow up and stop the fan takes over. 👍

The original I had fitted was a second unit from an l322 supercharge model. It was experimental at first then I replaced it when it gave up being ten year old or more. 🤔

These gearboxes are known to give up unfortunately. If there are metal fragments in the oil this will confirm the torque converter has shed and poisoned the gearbox and it's oil circulation system. Usually a recon box and torque converter with an oil circuit flush would be needed. 😬

Just to add, run the hose up along and around the side of the battery like the later 38's do. It bleeds much quicker that way 👍 The early ones like my 99 had the pipe go down and behind the battery. 🙄
