Well blow me! I did as ya said Batts and during the period of 5 minutes instead of goin for a cuppa I used the time to check the fuses in the engine bay and you guessed it! One of them was blown. Replaced that and the alarm sprung to life and the car started as normal. Talk about Bizarre...

Battery may still operate lights but have nowhere near enough power to turn over the starter motor. Could still be the battery. OR may be the starter solenoid. Try a jump start as "Lofty" says.
