    propshaft balence

grab the prop shaft and rotate it while holding either side of the uj, see if there is an rotational play. Do that to all 3 uj's and also the front prop CV joint. There should be no rotational play in any of these. Report back and we'll go from there. Oh and regards the vcu alignment, I told...

    Diff Swap

You can do it your garage. Fairly simple, you can just about get the driveshafts out if you remove lower wishbone bolts and handbrake cable clip and pull wheel out board, do that one side then you can slide diff across to get driveshaft out from other side without removing the other wishbone

    propshaft balence

You are chasing your tail messing with the vcu alignment, changing the angle is just highlighting an issue with the uj or CV joint. I have changed hundreds of vcu's and not once aligned them with a square, and never had a vibration. My guess is that one of the uj next to the vcu is worn. Just...

As long as the vcu bearings aren't the ones with the overly stiff rubber then just rough alignment is fine. The engine and diff move so exact alignment with these is complete tosh. Your vibration will be coming from elsewhere. Try uj's and front prop cv joint.

It makes no difference what so ever, the vcu slips so within 10 yards of driving the front and rear prop alignment has changed. Its all a load of balls about marking how the prop is bolted to the ird and rear diff, makes no difference what so ever.

    yet another VCU question

Sorry but that means they haven't checked the vcu operation at all. In my experience there are very few places who know how yo test these properly, with land rover dealers being the worst! If you send it we will check it for free, OK you will have to payout for postage, but if it fails the test...

    only 2 wheel drive.

Reading this post the OP states all of the prop rotates, hence its not the vcu

    only 2 wheel drive.

If front half of prop is rotating its nothing to do with the vcu
  19. austen

    only 2 wheel drive.

This will be the thrust bearing in the ird has collapsed, allowing the crown wheel to move across enough for the pinion to spin over the top of it. The result is a wrecked crown wheel and pinion and you will need a replacement or recon IRD. The car could carry on like this for 1000's of miles...

    only 2 wheel drive.

Jack front wheels off the ground and let clutch out very slowly, see if you have any drive, obviously don't let clutch out if you feel the car starting to move ;). Or just jack one rear wheel up and try to turn it, if it turns freely, look if front prop is rotating, if it is them its ird
