    Strange transmission problem

Thanks, looked at it last night. Drained the transfer box oil and it looked fine - some small metal dust on the drain plug but nothing major. Centre diff spins freely with no noises/grating. There is a bit of backlash in all the transmission generally. What can I check next? One of the front...

    Strange transmission problem

Thanks for that, I will have a look, I have quite a bit of transmission backlash so I'm expecting the splines to be not great here. But if the problem was here, wouldn't it be apparent when going along in 2 wheel drive too? A few more questions - the clicking noise you get when the diff lock...

    MTF/ATF identification

Thanks for your replies, its red but doesn't smell too bad, nothing like as bad as EP90. I found half a bottle of MT75 in the garage which Ive written LR on so I'm guessing its probably that. Thanks again

    Strange transmission problem

Hi, I have this problem with my 90 which feels much like the diff lock seems to engage and disengage on its own. I'm wondering if the centre diff is about to fail? It happened over a couple of days after which i removed the front prop shaft so I could use it to get to work as didn't want to...

    MTF/ATF identification

Hi, simple question - I can't remeber whether I put in ATF or MTF into my lt77 last time I replaced the oil. I want to top up the levels but dont know what to use. How do I identify whats in there already - do they look or smell different? Thanks

    Argh, no drive, help

Yep, clutch centre. When I took the box out, I was expecting the clutch plate to look mangled but it looked fine so I went and found myself another gearbox. I assumed it was gearbox anyway as it was a very geary noise. Just before fitting new box, I noticed some tiny springs in the bellhousing...

    Argh, no drive, help

Thanks for all your replies. A rivet holding the clutch plates together had failed allowing a cog like thing in the centre of the plate to rotate. Occasionally it would engage and work ok for a bit, and then fail again. It wasn't visible unless the clutch plate was taken off. Thanks again

    Argh, no drive, help

I'm guessing because the shaft at the back of the tranfer box isn't turning, the drive isn't getting as far as the transfer box so the transfer lever is out of the equation. Thats a guess mind but it does sound a bit like a gear not engaging - perhaps a fault with the gear selector. I'll take...

    Argh, no drive, help

No prop shafts turn, the drive doesn't appear to be getting out of the gearbox. Cheers

    Argh, no drive, help

Thanks for your reply. I just had another play with it and it was working fine for a few minutes up the drive, but when I gave it a bit of gas, it felt like it had jumped out of gear and made a gog/grating noise. It hadn't jumped out of gear. I guess this is sounding more like a gearbox problem...

    Argh, no drive, help

Can anyone help diagnose this: Driving along and had sudden loss of drive. Here's the info Engine running, clutch down (feels ok) into gear (any gear)and when i lift the clutch up, there is a sort of cog not engaging noise. I'm hoping its just the clutch splines broken off but the noise sounds...

    200 TDi conversion turbo piping

Hi, what size pipe should I use from the air filter to the turbo - can I get away with 51mm tubing as that all I have really and thats what is from the turbo to plenum. I'm not using an intercooler. It looks like its 60mm on the turb going in so would need a reducer. thanks jeremy

    2.5 n/a to 200TDi questions

mmm, my n/a cable mounts on a mount under the vacuum pump. I dont think this bracket will fit on the 200. I dont know what it's supposed to look like in the disco.

    2.5 n/a to 200TDi questions

Thanks. I'll use the flywheel housing from the n/a then - not looking forward to getting the flywheel bolts off! Another question, I dont have the disco fuel filter housing so am using the original one with loads of connections (5). Which ones do I connect were? Does anyone know what size...

    2.5 n/a to 200TDi questions

I know its been covered a zillion times a zillion different ways but... I'm on a tight budget so bodging is a viable option: I need to change the PAS pipe lengths - Can I use 8mm compression fittings/copper/steel pipe? For the reservoir pipes, do these need to be special hydraulic material to...

    Engine noise driving me nuts

Hi, the cam follwers were removed when I did the test - they all looked good. I was thinking of putting it all back together but removing a couple of pushrods to rule out a particular cylinder valve gear? Yes, the followers may bounce around on the cam but there is not much force on them and its...

    Engine noise driving me nuts

Sorry to drag this one out... I can't hear the noise with the head off and spinning on the starter. The rocker assembly looks very good - no play in the rockers in any direction and barely visible wear on the bar. (I'm wondering if its a recon head its so good) I've only had time to remove a...

    Engine noise driving me nuts

Thanks for your help on this. Should I remove the rockers from the shaft and look for serious wear on the shaft. I'll take the valves out and look for play in the guides. thanks

    Engine noise driving me nuts

Right, I checked the rockers with the engine running - pressing down on the rocker both sides and I didn't notice anything and no change to the noise. I've now got the head off again to remove the cam follers and they seem to be very clean and shiny - I haven't turned the engine over but the...
