"A showroom fresh Jimny is better off road, than a similar defender"

I've owned LandRovers, Jeeps, GMC's, and an assortment of other 4x4 vehicles up in the Canadian north. The best offroad 4x4 in factory configuration i have used was a 1979 International Harvester Scout II. Narrow wheel stance was key as it kept the vehicle out of ruts. It also had full leaf...

    Help diagnose Gearbox noise

Thanks for responding! It is a high speed grinding noise. It can be felt through the gearstick, though because it is such a high speed grinding, the feeling is slight. Nothing as severe (in terms of felt experience) as when you grind a gear normally on a bad gear change.

    Help diagnose Gearbox noise

An oil change is definitely on the list of items i gave to the repair shop. I am not able to get MTF-94 oil in Argentina, where the Landy is. So i am stuck with ATF dexron III. Nevertheless, as the vehicle is in Argentina, and I am not, i am trying to troubleshoot this gearbox problem as best...

    Help diagnose Gearbox noise

I have a 1989 Defender 110 with a 2.5TD motor and a LT77 gearbox. I am a new owner to this vehicle, so am not sure what repairs/maintenance was previously preformed. The issue is: When the gearbox is attempted to be put into 1st gear with the gearbox oil cold, there is a loud high-speed...

    Sat Nav DVD Player Region

Your DVD player has the functionality to be multi-region, but it has been software set for a particular region at date of manufacture. These devices are sometimes hackable, but it requires a lot of advanced skills, assuming no one has posted a how-to already for you. Search the internet for...

    19j crank pressure

definitely do a compression test on the engine. I wouldn't be so quick to throw out a 19J and replace it with a 200tdi.The reason is that actually there is nothing structurally wrong with a 19J except that the earlier models had a poor cylinder head design. If you can repair your 19J with new...

    Snorkel for 1989 2.5TD

Where can i find a snorkel for a 1989 Defender 110 2.5TD (J19 engine)? I have found kits for 200tdi, 300tdi, and td5.... is there any difference? what side of the vehicle should the snorkel be mounted on? it is a LHD.

    19j crank pressure

A cracked block usually results in water in the motor oil. Check your oil to see if it is a murky brown (evidence of water coolant). My 19J smokes like crazy and it is hard to start..but for me it is a piston problem. I need to have my cylinders rebored and new pistons installed. 19J's have a...

    Bad 19J or good 19J ?

Actually it is a no brainer for for me to repair my 19J. My defender is in Buenos Aires where there are no 200tdi's as they were never sold there. Only 300tdi's are available, but even the most worn out old beast is US$4000. And shipping an engine from the UK is not very smart as there are...

    Bad 19J or good 19J ?

I spoke with Turner Engineering about the quality of the 1983-1988 vs 1988-1990 19J's. Turner Engineering claims that there are two differences to be aware of: 1) the early model cylinder head was of poor design 2) the early model cylinder block had different main bearings. Turner Engineering...

    Bad 19J or good 19J ?

well, i just got some information that says that the change of manufacturing from the bad engine to the good engine was done in the middle of the 1988 model year!! Arg! If anyone has a 19J from 1988, please share your VIN and engine number with me. I really would like to find out if I have a...

    Bad 19J or good 19J ?

There is a Wikipedia entry on Land Rover engines. Land Rover engines - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia In that entry it states that the 'good' 19J engines were manufactured from 1988 to 1990. That made me feel a whole lot better as my model is from 1988...I guess that explains the 330,000kms...

    Bad 19J or good 19J ?

I have a 19J in a 1988 manufactured Defender 110. I know that the 19J's manufactured in the early years have notorious problems with broken pistons and blocks, while in the final few years of manufacture Land Rover had solved this problem. I know that the pivotal serial number for this...
