You are correct, TD4. How would I tell if it's crank shaft failure? When I take the oil cap off and look inside the engine, I can see the bottom half turning on ignition, but the top half is not...

Yup, the news I didn't want to hear has come down the line. Broke down the other day driving to work, nothing abnormal on the run, bit of vibration in the clutch pedal which I was discussing in another thread (thought it might be the flywheel) but it would seem that oil has not been distributed...

I also thought this when I bought mine 9 months ago. Since then, VCU has gone and DMF is about to go (110,000miles, so it's had a good run!). Also, some little sh*ts ripped off my rear wiper arm :mad: Alas, wouldn't be a Landie if it didn't need fixing every few months! :rolleyes:

How are you getting on with the Solid? I understand that pulling away will be more of a kick in the backside than usual, but beyond that, is there much difference?

Gonna bring this little thread back to life! My TD4 has developed a knock when I depress the clutch pedal which I can both hear and feel through the pedal. It seems to be at the same rate as the revs. Also sounds like I've got 2 diesel engines under the bonnet... From what I have read on this...

Hello Kent & Sussex people, I am fairly new to Hythe and was wondering if anybody has had any good experience with local garages or specialists with their Landies. Got a few jobs that need doing and want them done right! ;)

I'm pretty familiar with Bell now, spoken to one of the guys there. My ponderment is...do I get a refurb VCU for £200, or get a new GKN one for £280. Can the refurbs be considered 'as new'?

On a fairly related note...if I'm buying aftermarket parts i.e. the bearings, props, VCU...what's the best brand to go for? If I get all GKN, it's going to cost in the region of £900. There are some other brands on www.island-4x4.co.uk (my local parts dealer) such as Bearmach and some genuine LR...

After checking out my picture again (the one attached to a post above), I think I can see the circlip...so I'm guessing that the CV and front prop are all hunky dory. Bearing in mind that the bearings were cheap s**t (I think they were £15 each) and got smashed to bits after about 10 minutes...

I don't recall seeing a circlip, but it may have been disguised in the mass of grease. It's all in my dads garage at the moment, so I'll have to check it out again next time I'm up there

Yup. Going GKN. It was a stupid move in the first place, seeing as even top quality bearings and exactly the most expensive part of the drive train!

It may have been sitting out of the cup where I took it off. Aren't any signs of damage that I can see.

I can't seem to get the CV away from the shaft...how do you get it off? Wammer job?
