just in case anyone is stuck with the same problem, have now rectified. involves removing plastic cover under the driver side (3 pins 10mm) exposing the belts and pulleys. take a 13mm socket and loosen pulley over which the alternator belt runs, then tension the belt, again using a 13mm socket...

hi all;- own a 2000 1.8. first time ive eva posted on here. have developed a squeal on starting. fan belt feels tight. but the other rubber belt nearby which goes around the pulleys is quite slack. as you can tell aint much in the know. cant see any means of adjustment. :confused:
