Did find something interesting lying besides the battery!

From what I read in the Haynes manual and online, I thinking it's the solenoid. Next step is to figure out what that is, and where it is.

When I turn the key, the lights come on as usual, but the engine doesn't turn, there's nothing. Last night when I started it, it made a strange noise, now this morning there nothing when I turn the key - apart from the lights. Any thoughts, cheers?

I don't know if the door was replaced or not, it's not mentioned in the service history, but it's ex-MOD so who knows. I thought the wiring might be more straightforward if it came out of the factory with the third light/mount fitted, but I've no idea what I'm talking about. I've ordered the...

And, I'm guessing that, if the original door was not fitted with a third light/mount, then installing a third light may be more awkward - it will be a modification!

You're right! You don't necessarily need a third brake light to pass the french MOT. But if the "as factory" car was originally fitted with one, then you must have one to pass the MOT. I've failed because the rear window has a mounting for a third brake light, so it looks like it's been removed...

Well without a third brake light I can't get the French MOT and then I can't register the defender in France. I'd prefer not to register it as the French can't chase UK cars for speed cameras, on the otherhand I'll lose my insurance in April if I'm not registered ... There may be some truth in...

I don't know what you mean? I've got to get one. It's true though, that if I fit it, it will likely be a bloody disaster.

Actually, I now think the wire is for the rear interior light - which doesn't work!

Thanks again for suggestions. My MAF cleaner arrived a few days ago, and I cleaned it. I'm not sure whether its helped or not yet, as the problem occured in sub-zero cold starts and its been warmer lately ... In the mean time, the check engine light comes and goes!

Yes, you're right, the two faults were the air flow meter and the EGR valve. Apparently, each of these faults can set off the other. Anyone know whether one, or both, could be cauing the power loss and stalling after cold starts? Cheers.
