So I replaced the diesel leak off pipes at the weekend and yes they were hard and brittle. However this doesn't seemed to have helped the problem. It still takes 3-4 attempts to start and when it does it splutters for a 5 seconds with cloud of smoke and then runs ok. So what's next to check...

Why would you want to depressurise the system then?

Means you're in the top height setting, try pressing the height button down once. If it stays on it might be a fault but someone more knowledgeable will be able to tell you that

How would I know if it was a crap chip? I've never driven a normal 2.5 diesel?

So I went from driving a 3.9 classic to a 2.5 diesel and I thought the diesel was slow, then turns out it had a chip already fitted but because I wasn't used to a diesel it seemed very slow in comparison, I think the same applies here.
