Hi All I'm looking to buy a defender. I've been offered one cheap, as it failed the MOT on a few things. I can do all of the items, except replace the manifold gasket. Would this be an easy fix? Thanks in advance, it's a 1989 County V8 Petrol.

regarding the steering, i've found the adjustment nut. It can turn either way - i turned it 3 turns clockwise and the steering wheel has stiffened up, but there is still play. How do i know when it's as tight as it can be without causing the lock to jam?

how else can I check the earth? The battery -ve is connected well to the engine, which then goes to the chassis. I'll take a peek behind the dash....

cheers guys, i'm confident in doing it. Found the overhaul kit from paddocks, will be ordering that and doing the work on saturday if the weather holds out and i dont have to work. Will keep you all updated and no doubt will need a few more pointers yet!

cheers! Spoke to the local parts guys, but it seems expensive. They also said I should change the wheel 'somethings' aswell. The parts alone came to about £300!!! Surely that cant be right? I was thkning of 50/60 quid. How can I tell if the drums are badly worn?
