Pull out the fuses for the lights and if they're still on then pull out the other fuses one by one (remember where they go) till they go off, when they do go off that's what they're in contact with Check all wiring and connectors , any old alarm wires, towing sockets, split chargers, dashboard...

I'd say alternator as its not kicking the charge in right, probably doesn't do it in tickover as it may be running off the battery A lot of garages do free checks, suggest doing it sooner rather than later as if it's not charging the battery right, the first sign of frost will finish it off

Doesn't the glass unscrew sort of. Took my series 3 speedo apart and you can see gaps in the rim where you turn the glass till it pops off You can then get into the speedo and really start to see the mechanics of it.... Failing this another speedo is about £20 off eBay

You sure it only does it in petrol stations??? And not little stops at the shops ?? Check for bad earth straps Check for usual power drains.. Battery, alternator, ignition switch, alarm fob Not something silly like a power drain on a exposed cable when the tank is full ??

Radiator blocked? Water pump? Suggest flushing system out and make sure bled properly afterwards
