Bolt extraction... it might be time to raise the white flag

Oh, good point! There is a squared section at the end of the extractor. I think I'd be asking for (more) trouble with mole grips since the square bit is pretty small. I'll see what spanners I've got that'll fit. Thanks!

Bolt extraction... it might be time to raise the white flag

You guys never fail... to make me laugh. :D I'll go do some reading about hand tools... can you point me in the direction of something like what you had in mind?

Bolt extraction... it might be time to raise the white flag

I broke a bolt while removing my water pump. After much cogitation (and reading LZ) I selected a pair of Irwin cobalt LH-threaded bolt extractors - one small and a bigger one just in case. I drilled a beautiful pilot hole into the broken bolt, smack in the middle and straight down the...

    I've gone and done it

Thanks for that link - and you're right about the rad. Coincidentally, I just checked and it would definitely fit if I took out the rad, which doesn't seem like a really big effort from the state of things now.

    I've gone and done it

Welp, despite your good advice and warnings I've managed to cock it up. :( I wanted to peek inside the water pump since all I had left to do was to unscrew the (15!) bolts holding it together. I went around getting them all gradually looser. One of them was stubborn, so I applied WD40, elbow...

    I've gone and done it

I'm definitely not above asking for help -- if anyone nearby can spare some time I can definitely spare some beer. :D Just trying not to take advantage of folks, really, and hoping to learn something along the way. I'm short of the tools (e.g. no soft mallet). I'll give putting it all back...

    I've gone and done it

Not sure what you mean about using two nuts to wind the stud back in. The thread is clean and I can get it back in to finger-tight, but I'm not sure how to do better than that. Also, do you figure I need a puller to get the fan pulley off or should I just yank on it some more? As for the...

    I've gone and done it

I've taken apart stuff and now I can't put it back. My goal was to remove (and inspect) the water pump (as part of my overheating engine odyssey). I got as far as the fan pulley, but it bested me. In the first pic you can see the fan pulley (minus belts) still attached to the water...

    Viscous fan not coming off

I recently replaced my visco fan clutch and bought one of these: Viscous Fan Hub Tool 32 & 36mm - 4x4 Store Worked like a charm to take off the original when coupled with a screw driver jammed into one of the pulley holes to stop the whole assembly from spinning. It sounds like you're trying...

    Cooling Problems

Okie - after a holiday and several (unrelated) trips to A&E for my son, I finally got some time. In case you missed last week's exciting episode, here's where we left our hero: The new viscous fan clutch is installed. Rad is flushed & topped up with tap water. Thermostat is removed. Upon...

    Mud Tyres on Snow

As usual, great feedback - thanks guys. After your input I'll probably go with BFG A/T. I spend too much time on the road to get something so aggressive. The Insa Turbo Special Track looks awesome, but after your suggestions I did some reading. Apparently that tyre (and other grippy ones like...

    Mud Tyres on Snow

Good idea? Bad idea? I'm pondering some new tyres and some of the gnarly mud terrain variety would look mighty nice. (Nothing chav, tho.) We get snow regularly enough in winter and my local roads are narrow/steep, so I'd like to avoid looking like a total ass, if I can help it.

    Cooling Problems

Okie. Had a new idea for a candidate cause: something to do with the viscous fan clutch. I read this thread and thought it sounded awfully familiar. Basically, my Landy was over-cooling for a few months (temp gauge never reading over 1/4 or 1/3 from cold) and then suddenly under-cooling...

    Cooling Problems

Could I be in need of a something like this special tool? Viscous Fan Hub Tool 32 & 36mm - 4x4 Store I guess that means I ought to be going after the big nut at the hub. Now how to keep it from spinning...

    Cooling Problems

Alright, finally had a free day to play with the Landy. Talker - when I last cranked it, the heater hoses (there are two, AFACT) got warm. However, they're wrapped in a foam padding which is what I touched. Definitely too hot to touch the bare metal. This morning I flushed the rad and...

    landy overheating

Thanks WLM - I've been waiting for someone to suggest how to assess the water pump. (Mine's overheating, too.)
