    planning a v8

DI with GEMS varies (especially if mods are done) - 12 to 15 mpg about town - 18 to 20 highway. D2 = with Motronic = 18 mpg in town (better torque via the intake manifold setup but less to work with in tuning [GEMS much better in that department according to Mark Adams]) BTW - according to...

You don't have to use LR vacuum pipe - any good pipe of similar dimensions will do.

MAF Wiire Cleaning (yes or no)

Depends on the MAF: i.e., GEMS MAF responds very well to cleaning (with actual sensor cleaner spray can); BOSCH MAF will die a quick and ugly death if you try and clean it - or so the general consensus of BOSCH MAF cleaners would have it. Earlier than GEMS MAF - I can only claim ignorance on as...

    V8 tappet set-up noise

, That makes perfect sense on the comp test, however, the preload test is best done with lifters drained (thus, a real pain to oil them up properly again without taking the rocker shafts off - after setting the preload). BTW - some of my valve-train squawking was owing to rockers not being...

    V8 tappet set-up noise

Hi Fett; Cam is a John Eales about a stage 1) made to work with Mark Adam's Tornado chip for my GEMS 4.00 liter NAS. Lifters were either from John or MM 4X4 (I can't remember now [LoL]. Reason for shim/preload setup was that Mark Adams thought I should given some of the history of engine...

    V8 tappet set-up noise

just completed a new tappet pre-load set-up (shimmed rocker-shaft posts 18 thou each); now, after starting-up I am getting noisy lifters (although quietening down a bit) and a lot of chirping. I am concerned that valve gear is not getting its oil but shims all had holes cut to permit oil flow...

Sam's new engine build thread!! HELP! :D

I don't know about anyone else but I would have to say I am turning a little green with envy - wishing that freshly painted engine were mine! Those rockers and plenum chamber/throttle body housing look top notch!

Amen to that Fett - I was impressed with how clean the rocker assembly looked as far as varnish is concerned.

Sam's new engine build thread!! HELP! :D

Beautiful work! I like the shape of those rocker covers better than mine (later 4.00 liter) as that rounded top line would make them a lot easier to polish (mine were a bastard as I didn't want to ruin the straight line).

Sam's new engine build thread!! HELP! :D

I went for the polished aluminum look with the idea being (probably silly on my part) - reflect heat away from engine don't absorb it in with black (original colour on mine and a right pain to get rid of). It is a painstaking process though and if time is short - paint them blue.

Sam's new engine build thread!! HELP! :D

Good to know - which causes me to relax somewhat on my constantly 'too-rich' 4.00 liter GEMS (NAS) - other than sooting the exhaust up and carboning the combustion chamber area (not a good thing but better than toasting your valves). Part of my 'too rich' dilemma was caused by replacing...

Help me rebuild/ fix my beloved V8

Why oh why did they not just 'top-hat' those damned liners at the LR factory to begin with - it would have saved them untold amounts of grief and saved the reputation of an otherwise very decent small 8 cylinder. Talk about penny-wise and pound-foolish! Wolf

    Im back with a V8 !! a few Q's

On #3 - it could be bushes and or it could be a broken anchor point (i.e., where bushes sit) on that rear trailing arm - I had exact same problem and had to weld the anchor point up. Wolf
