Hi, just realised that, so will have to get a different coloured speedo drive gear, close to the amount of teeth on the black one, and then hopefully the cable will fit. On holiday at the moment, so will tackle it when we get back.

Well, we took the drive gear out and still can't get the end of the speedo cable out, so just ordered another one. Difficult to find a black one, but it is now on it's way. Drive gear housing was so much easier to get out than we thought it would be, and in good condition, even the drive gear...

Speedo drive gear is out, and the end of the cable is still stuck in it. So new one on it's way. Shame as the drive gear itself is in good nick. Thanks for your help, thanks also to sierrafery for his tutorial on how to get it out. Much appreciated. Well done for saving another landrover...

Thanks, found that earlier and tomorrow is now the day to get it out of there and the end of the speedo cable out of it, and not having to follow those "good" drivers doing the 20mph speed limit.

I am more interested in doing it with hubby now I know there are all sorts of innuendo I can use when he is doing it!! A bit like when you bleed the breaks eh!!

Did you take it all apart just to help us, or were you doing some other job at the same time? Bless you if you just did it for us to see what we were dealing with.

Thanks, we just got to that bit, and are now trying to get the speedo drive gear out so that we can get the end of the speedo cable out of it. Yours looks a lot cleaner than ours though, and our bolts were knackered, so some more replacement parts!! Post woman thinks we are building a landie...

Thanks, the gearbox is a R380, so Disco 1 about 1991 year. It has a weird star insert, so something like a star shaped allen key seems favourite. I have been able to find the actual filler level plug, but no actual tool to get it out with. Look forward to hearing from you.

Can anyone tell me what size the star socket is for the gearbox fill level plug on Discover 1 gearbox?

Thanks for all the replies, we were having to re-furb the newer engine as the engine in our landie tried to die on us. After new plugs, checking for milky oil, it turned out to be the coil. Had a spare from the donor Discovery, so voila, landie back up and running. So, engine rebuild not so...
