Clutch burning smell but no slip

I saw a mate of mine’s wife do that, but didn’t know her well enough to comment. I was right in the passenger seat and I got sympathy pains for the clutch plate. There was a stink of burning but she didn’t seem to notice.

    Freelander 1 trolley jack

https://www.screwfix.com/p/hilka-pro-craft-3-tonne-quick-lift-garage-jack/35331 Bought this one 4 or 5 years ago and not regretted it. It has a quick lift lever and a good, stable base and cup. A world away from those silly little diy jacks, although those are quite handy for carrying about. As...

Freelander 1 Power Issues - Thread has Fault Codes

Sounds like a split boost hose. Check all the hoses after the turbo for splits, bearing in mind that some may not be obvious. Most common site is the elbow before the EGR valve. Alternatively, get someone to rev the engine until it hisses, then the leak should make itself known.

Vibration at 50mph (VCU support bearings just replaced)

Glad you got it sorted. Steady on! Aftermarket stuff has its place, but there are certain products that are not fit for purpose. Suppliers seem to confuse the issue with words that mean nothing, like ‘quality aftermarket’, ‘OEM quality’ and the like. Best to pop a question on here if you’re...

Vibration at 50mph (VCU support bearings just replaced)

I recently ordered a GKN prop bearing and was sent an aftermarket one instead. The bearing itself (unbranded, should be FAG) was mounted off-centre in the mount and slightly tilted to one side as well. The seals on the aftermarket bearings are inadequate, so they lose grease, take in water and...

Disco 3 (LR3) Intermittent air suspension fault

Hmmm, didn’t think of that. Well, I’ve done my usual approach to annoying intermittent faults - have a tootle around for something obvious, then hand the car back to the wife to see if it gets worse. If it’s battery or compressor it should get worse.

Disco 3 (LR3) Intermittent air suspension fault

Tyres are reasonable, but I’ve topped up all the pressures anyway. I’ll see how the thing goes for now, as I’m reluctant to jump in with a new compressor.

Disco 3 (LR3) Intermittent air suspension fault

I’ll look into that, thanks. I’ve buttoned it all up again, to see how it performs now. The wife generally drives it, and she’s just mentioned that while a fault message was displayed, the car felt unstable at speed, sort of wallowing. I wonder if a front or rear valve block has a sticky...

Disco 3 (LR3) Intermittent air suspension fault

Found the air filter - out of sight almost right behind the left rear light. Removed the light and vent behind, then I could access the back of the plastic clip to pop the filter free. Didn’t seem too bad but giving it a clean anyway. Sprayed the air tank with soapy water - nothing. Compressor...

Disco 3 (LR3) Intermittent air suspension fault

Thanks Lynall. None of the corners dropped at all overnight. Pulled out the compressor, which is an AMK made in 2013. Stripped it down and it looked fine inside, including the dryer granules. Next step was the intake filter, but I couldn’t find it. Any idea where it is? Haynes manual says...

Disco 3 (LR3) Intermittent air suspension fault

07 Disco 3 HSE with 162,000 miles. Intermittently gives suspension fault warning when first started up as I drive away. Always goes away if the key is cycled. Codes (read with iCarsoft i930 V2): C1A36 Exhaust valve U0416 Invalid data from vehicle dynamics module U0100 Lost comm with ECM/PCM...

    Freelander no electric problem

Your garage doesn’t sound very good, but then it’s easy to say that from behind a keyboard. A flat battery can have many causes, only one of those being the battery itself. There are several checks to do before condemning the battery: Alternator output and ripple test, as mentioned. Parasitic...

    Freelander 1 Brake Flares - A cautionary tale !!

Nice info! As said, wrong union used, but the mechanic probably tightened it up too much. I was once helping a (qualified, experienced) mechanic fit a copper brake pipe, and watched him honking the union up like it was steel. He told me to watch for leaks, stood on the brake pedal, and...

    Clutch Pedal Sticks

Not quite sure how a leaky crankcase seal would cause the pedal to stick, but while they were in there they could have changed the clutch slave cylinder. Might be time for a decent independent to look at it.

Freelander 1 Manual gearbox, no reverse

Lift the gearlever boot and check there’s nothing stopping the stick moving into reverse. Get under and check the linkage is free - squirt of oil helps. Watch the final part of the linkage above the gearbox as someone moves the stick. More oil. Check the gearbox oil level, or just change it...

Freelander 1 Good spare parts list

@andyfreelandy I did try this a while back for Britpart stuff that’s actually ok, but it degenerated into rants about how crap Britpart was. Maybe yours is a better approach. No links, but all tried and trusted for years: Drop links, ball joints: Lemforder. Clutch and slave (Td4): AP Prop...

    GKN prop bearing

Duff bearing picked up, proper GKN one dropped off: No offer of apology which would have been courteous, but at least they got it sorted.

    GKN prop bearing

Apparently they’ve sent out a replacement and have arranged for pickup of the old one. Good stuff.

No news yet. Amazing how quickly the answer came back to the first email, but not the second.

    GKN prop bearing

Interesting. It’s sad because I’ve been buying from them for years. Let’s see what their response is. They replied quickly to my email asking if the item was GKN (“It should come in a grey box and have FAG on the bearing”). Invoice shows check marks by the packer and quality control. I...
