How to lower intercooler temperatures cheaply?

I've been wondering for a while about fitting a bigger intercooler, and the problems with blocking the radiator - at the moment we're hovering between 30 and 40 degrees C here in Morocco, and there are some very long climbs, right up to 3,000 metres altitude. Looking at my 200Tdi, it seems that...

    Lt77 jamming up when hot

Ah well. I've no idea what the suffix is on the existing box, and I can always swap it for another one at the scrappers. My best Land Rover mecanic in Marrakech says they strip parts off Disco boxes (I think he meant R380's, but he might have been talking about LT77 short stick) to keep the...

    Lt77 jamming up when hot

I think the plan is to strip the selector and, if necessary, box and use whatever is necessary from the scrapyard bits. I saw a 200tdi that was fitted with a short stick box once - it didn't look too bad.

    Lt77 jamming up when hot

Thanks James. I've acquired a secondhand LT77 (short stick 53D) and a long stick turret from the scrapper today, so I think it's out with the tunnel tomorrow. Shame I've just sound proofed it all!

    Lt77 jamming up when hot

Hi Latest problem is the gearbox getting very difficult, particularly when hot. Drive at 50mph or use decent amounts of throttle and there's massive friction between gears, particularly across the gate. Bashing the lever left and right seems to ease it. Once you are in gear it's fine, no...

    Salisbury axle into Disco

Thank you James, I hadn't noticed your reply when I last posted (from the phone - small screen...). So, track is the same, but if I take off over a hump back bridge the sliding joint on the prop will come apart? I've done about 10,000 miles in it, including some pretty rough stuff, and...

    Salisbury axle into Disco

I know the Salisbury is stronger, but I wanted the disc brakes and I don't normally carry a car load of rocks... but do you know if the track is the same, or is the Salisbury wider? And will my propshaft bend?

    Salisbury axle into Disco

I've just read this... I've a 110 with the axle off my old 300tdi Disco. As far as I can remember we did nothing to the prop at all. Does this mean something nasty is going to happen if I manage to compress both rear springs fully? Incidentally, is there a difference in track between the...

turn up the boost to cure black smoke?

One reason I'm slightly suspicious is that the gauge does seem reluctant to move off the zero, whereas on other boost gauges they seem to respond very quickly. Almost as if it's too damped. Perhaps there's a kink in the hose somewhere.

Next problem... find a reliable tyre pump and gauge!

turn up the boost to cure black smoke?

Lynall, I'm with you on that and follow your logic. Personally, I'd have thought that the inlet manifold would read the same pressure as the wastegate, but it seems others disagree. I've been googling about how accurate my gauge is likely to be. It's a mechanical gauge made by an outfit called...

turn up the boost to cure black smoke?

Lynall It's not which end, it's where. Mine's in the line that goes to the diesel pump. There's another that goes to the wastegate. And then there's the main circuit - in the intercooler pipes or on the inlet manifold. Where did you try mounting the gauges and was there any difference at all?
  14. U

turn up the boost to cure black smoke?

You mean the other small pipe - the one that goes to the wastegate? Could be... I know that, strictly, you should drill and tap the inlet manifold, but I don't need that degree of accuracy. But I'm surprised it's so low. It would be easy to move it to the wastegate pipe if that works better -...

turn up the boost to cure black smoke?

Well, my boost gauge has arrived safely from Taiwan and is now plumbed in. The most I can get it to read is just under 0.5 bar - and I think the 200tdi is supposed to run 0.7 bar as standard? I've plumbed in the t piece on the pip that leads to the pump. So; possibilities are: 1. It wasn't...

90 rear drum brakes jamming - Please help with ideas

Those are exactly the symptons I had. It has to be either calipers, hoses or master cylinder - I don't think there is anything else that can give that sensation, unless something has jammed/dropped off inside a drum? There's a 'pressure limiting' valve to the rear on some models - that might...

turn up the boost to cure black smoke?

Charles, I had wondered whether the pump could sense the amount of boost pressure... But then there are so many threads saying that just turning up the boost/fitting a big intercooler isn't enough - you need to fiddle with the pump to get more power. My conclusion was the little pipe just...

turn up the boost to cure black smoke?

Storm, I'm genuinely grateful for your advice... but I went ahead and tried it anyway! These things are subjective, but I'm sure there is a reduction in smoke (not so much quantity as the fact that it's not so opaque), measured by the very scientific traffic light grand prix at night...

turn up the boost to cure black smoke?

Well, you're right in that the problem is fuel, but... Black smoke is overfueling. If you increase boost, you need to increase fuelling to take full advantage. My logic is that as it's already over fuelling, raising the boost and introducing more air should help it burn more of the excess...

turn up the boost to cure black smoke?

Funnily enough, 2nd hand turbos and new bearings etc aren't that expensive here. Yet another part of the problem is that the current turbo is a little small - I think it came off an old Renault! I'm more worried about opening up the pump than anything... or blowing the head gasket.
