Thanks for the helpful comments, folks. The CP solution would be considerably cheaper than a door replacement and, IMHO, easier than rubbing down and respraying the existing mess (only to have to do it again and again, probably). I am now clearer about the effects on the spare wheel carrier...

Nice workshop, Clanforbes! I eckon that The Bus is an example of chequerplate put to good use. [Mr Google informs me that I can't afford to get my own plasma cutter (have you seen the current prices?:screaming_bug_eye_f) but maybe that's something to work towards, perhaps to share the costs...

UPDATE Right ... it seems that my Landy is fitted with an aftermarket Autowatch alarm/immobiliser. With the help of my friend Google, I have located a supply of remote fobs (at £40 a go from Autowatch) and have downloaded the relevant instructions for programming it etc. All I need to do now...
