I suppose the thing we seem to be missing here is that greenlaning, no matter how considerate you are, causes some level of damage to the countryside you're greenlaning through. Much as hiking causes some level of damage as well! I don't think the issue is that we cause damage by greenlaning...

Really stupid question - anyone know how to drain the oil out of a 300TDI gearbox? Is it the 32mm bolt? If so mine's stuck! I take it the transfer box is the 17mm hex bolt on the bottom to drain and the square bolt on the back to fill up?

So fitted a fan and cowling on the weekend, the smoking is a lot less frequent now and no where near as bad when it happens. engine temp stays consistent at about 1/3 on the guage. So problem's still there... any further ideas?

changed the whole driveshaft and CV joint... noise has got a lot quieter and less frequent but still there....!!! any ideas? diff?

I diont get the traditional CV clacking on full lock, symptoms are as described in the first post, this was why I asked as it wasn't classic CV symptoms.

Here's a strange symptom I've just noticed today... if I drive along in first at about 2.5k RPM then she starts smoking like a good-un, big old cloud of grey/blue smoke, if I let off so she goes onto over-run the cloud gets smaller and goes blue only. Any ideas?

Indeed... unfortunately I purchased the wrong side off of sh*tBay... DOH! The right one's now on it's way so I have a n/s/f half shaft and CV if anyone wants it!

Thanks for the info! Got to admit I do wondr if it is cack being sucked in from the inlet tract as it's a total mess in there and the smoking is very random as to when it occurs. Will check the fuel pump out.
