Flasher units look like relays & they live in the fuse box area (attached to the metal sheet that holds the fuse carriers). I imagine that these are 3 pin (along the lines of green, Lgreen/brown and Lgreen/purple). Try looking up PRC 8876 Flasher unit - 3 pin

First of all try re-seating the relay. It may just have bounced out. Also search for "VW 99 relay is a good replacement and will give you an adjustable intermittent time delay" Just for fun mind ;)

Aye, I'd try the relay first. Lives (should) fusebox area on a cable assembly. Look up PRC6864 up to KA927700 Or AMR2341 from KA927701
