not an expert by an means of the word but i had a similar problem a while back when i replaced the fuel tank on my 2.5 petrol so might be able to help a little. (presume its the same tank as a 200tdi??) if you lift the drivers seat you will see the sender and lift pump attached through the top...

Yeah what redhand said, any heavy duty mechanism should be wired by relay, it'll save the posability of melting switches and the like. i learned loads bout relays and wiring up lights by doing a search on here theres loads on it, good luck!

From what you describe it sounds like an after market alarm, have you checked under the bonnet for a siren? could be any kind of small box wired back to the one beside your battery when i bought my car recently it had an aftermarket alarm fitted, the siren was fitted to the bulkhead, anywho...
