Just don't go trying to make it into a defender or a "hybrid" ( a ridiculous term to use for a bastardised abomination ) it looks like you've got a relativley clean looking base for a good rebuild there - can't wait to see the bodges you find on the way if you do decide to rebuild it :D

How long before the battery died ? if died after a few cranks, then yer battery is borked. Blocked filter / air in the fuel filter / borked Lift pump, air in the Injector system, air in the lift pump.... Check the filter isn't blocked / full of air. Put yer hand under the lift pump and pump...

Smoky when I got him, I was hoping it'd adjust out, but i've rotated the pump as far as it'll go, and the pump is ticking it's nuts off. The smoke has reduced, but TBH, i'm thinking if the timing chain is stretched, it might explain why the pump has to be right on it's limit to get any decent...

So much for my deadline >:/ Engine is back in one piece, but smoking like a wall street fat-cat. Slave cylinder isn't disengaging clutch properly, so it'll probs be clutchplate or release arm borked. Either way it's Gearbox Out job to investigate the problem. Smoke is an issue, i'd adjust it...

Brush and roller seem to be working OK for me - makes a change I normally just guff the paint on a part and hope it doesn't run too badly :D If you use a rag roller (not foam) and roll nice and softly, then use a soft varnish brush to smooth any runs and do the hard to reach areas it comes out...
