You'll be very lucky indeed to find a rot free 300tdi disco unless you can get one that's had a nut and bolt rebuild with all the trouble spots replaced. Why not chop your hardtop defender in for a 110 station wagon?

the wolf is right. I only open my bonnet maybe once a week to check oils etc and on the rare occasion I need to get a bit more room I can take the spare off. The only place I can think of where it would be less in the way would be on the roof.

But how often do you need to lift the bonnet? Or especially flip it right back? I'm in and out of my back door all day long so it'd be a pain to have the spare on there even on a swingaway thingy.
