Valve and inlet manifold will most certainly be caked in black ****e, as for the colour of 'new' oil after 1000 miles, probably black as well, as it ain't new any more :)

Go buy an EGR bypass kit from here Alive Tuning - Land Rover Performance Tuning - Defender, Discovery, Freelander, Range Rover, TDi, TD4, TD5, TD6, TDV6, and TDV8 or similar, and if yer as bad as you say at tinkering like me, it'll take just over an hour and then you'll really notice the...
