Unless the manufacturer has spent a bit of money on a robust design, Key fobs don't last long! (Couple of years of constant use at best). Try the other one with a new battery. However, (ask girlfriend) the 'other' one may have had problems in the past which is why it became the "other one"...

I had a 900 SAAB back in 80's - that one had the ignition key under the handbrake and the gear lever had to be in reverse in order to get the key out. That way the car was locked in reverse and the handbrake lever was in the way of the key hole - so you couldn't drive a screwdriver or...

Saw one of those 'traffic cop' programs recently where the copper 'booked a motorcyclist for having a 'flip up' number plate. His argument was that he could flip it up out of the way if he was speeding(!) and thus avoid a fine. But you're right - if they feel arsey - they'll book you for anything.

Whilst changing gear my gear lever snapped off down at the ball (bugger!) Having removed it for welding (-will that work? - or will it just snap off by the weld?) Thought i might as well tackle the the two springs at front of selector which had snapped off/disappeared which bias the gear...
