When you say engaged, do you mean that the pedal is up? Disengaged is with foot on the pedal. If the clunking is only when the foot is on the pedal, ie disengaged, then I would imagine it is the friction plates or the central plate itself. If the clunking is when the pedal is up, ie engaged...
