ok, the light is on before start up then goes off after. So how do i test whether the wire or alternator is working ? i.e. the alternator could be knackered but because the wire is broken i would never know, hence why i want to test the wire cheers

erm... im not sure. My thinking is that the wire provides a voltage to the warning light, but if the alternator is on its last legs the warning light goes on as the voltage in the wire decreases due to a lack of voltage from the alternator? therefore by disconnecting the wire i am essentially...

ok, so the wire going from the warning light to the alternator is the `exciter` wire, but according to that the light should on if the wire is disconnected? When i disconnect the wire the light stays off? cheers

Hi, sorry i mean that i have removed the wire temporarily, the light remained off, however i thought it should go on as there is theroretically no charge from the alternator due to the wire being removed. Is this right? or should the light have stayed off? cheers

ok, just tested it On tickover - 14.25 ish volts Reved engine (not sure what rpm) - 14.10 Higher revs - 14.20 I therefore uess that the belt is slipping a bit; 1. Is that right? 2.Does it matter if im getting 14.10 volts anyway cheers

This may seem like a very silly question: I have just got a multimeter so where do i put the prongs to? red one to the alternator casing and black one to the engine block? I think the belt may be loose, so im gonna try and lever the alt and tighten the belt, then test it. Cheers

Cheers guys, I will invest in a multimeter Also when i put the alternator back i just used my stength to tension the belt by lifting the alternator then i tightened the bolt at the same time. Is this right? reading busters guide he states he used a lever? Thanks
